When news of Joseph Fiennes, a caucasian actor set to play Michael Jackson in a British comedy hit the internet, folks on social media expressed disapproval and blasted makers of the comedy for even suggesting that a white actor portray Jackson.
If you recall, MJ himself told Oprah Winfrey during an interview that he would never want a white actor to play him. Oprah brought up a story she came across about Michael wanting a white child to play him in a Pepsi commercial. Michael denied the rumor. Read his response below.
“That is so stupid,” Jackson immediately responds. “That’s the most ridiculous, horrifying story I’ve ever heard… Number one, it’s my face as a child in the commercial. Me when I was little. Why would I want a white child to play me? I’m a black American. I’m a black American. I’m proud to be a black American. I am proud of my race. I am proud of who I am. That’s like you wanting an oriental person to play you as a child. Does that make sense?”
