Trump Again Threatens Europe With Tariffs: Expect Instant Global Recession - Mish Talk

President Trump issued the first veto of his presidency, striking down a resolution that would have terminated his national emergency declaration diverting funding to build the wall.

White House spokeswoman Mercedes Schlapp would not say when the veto would happen, but told reporters Friday Trump is "doing what he believes is his constitutional duty, which is to protect the American people".

Critics have said Trump's emergency declaration violates the Constitution because Congress has the power to control spending. It is unlikely that Congress will have the two-thirds majority required to override Trump's veto, though House Democrats will try nonetheless.

Trump said the situation on the southern border was "a tremendous national emergency", adding that "our immigration system is stretched beyond the breaking point".

The president has said he wants a wall to prevent immigrants from crossing into the United States illegally. He wrote an opinion piece in the Washington Post at the time arguing there would be "no intellectual honesty" in supporting executive overreach by Trump that he had opposed under President Barack Obama.

He also said anyone who votes to overturn the national emergency is "against reality".

Tiger 'feeling good' as he arrives for the Players
Whenever a player with Woods' injury history has to pull out of an event, it's sure to ignite rumors that his end is near. Woods played between five and six times before the Masters during younger and healthier times over the last 15 years.

He praised the Republicans who voted against the bill as "strong, wonderful people".

"The fact that this is an emergency is undeniable", Nielsen said.

Trump tweeted about the political advantage he expects those who supported him will receive. The 12 GOP senators, including the party's 2012 presidential nominee, Mitt Romney of Utah, joined the dissent over the emergency declaration order that would enable the president to seize for the wall billions of dollars Congress meant to be spent elsewhere.

"I think actually a national emergency was designed for a specific objective like this, so we have a great case", Trump said.

If he [the president] approve he shall sign it, but if not he shall return it, with his Objections to that House in which it shall have originated, who shall enter the Objections at large on their Journal, and proceed to reconsider it. So, as a practical matter, the administration can continue to spend billions of dollars more on border barriers than lawmakers authorized, unless and until the courts intervene.

The bipartisan vote on Thursday was a slap at Trump for his decision to circumvent Congress and take money already designated for other programs to pay for a barrier on the southern border. His signature ended a 35-day partial shutdown of the federal government, which had been triggered by a showdown after Congress refused to appropriate the $5.7bn he requested to start construction at the border. Trump had campaigned for president promising Mexico would pay for the wall.
