Gusts of 65mph are likely along coastal areas, while wind speeds are predicted to reach 55mph inland.

"Storm Gareth is developing in the north Atlantic and it will push first towards the north of Ireland and then into the south", Met Eireann forecaster Matthew Martin said.

It will run from midday Tuesday 12th March until at least 9am on Wednesday 13th March 2019.

While the majority of the heavy rain will have passed over by Thursday, it will leave behind it persistent waves of showers. Highest temperatures of 7 to 10 degrees. Very windy with gales by dawn. The wind and showers will gradually ease as the day progresses, ahead of more prolonged evening rain. Afternoon highs will be around 7 to 10 degrees, but up to 11 degrees near the southeast coast. The northwest winds will eventually moderate early on Wednesday night, before backing westerly and freshening again overnight. Another weather front of rain and winds sweep across Britain on Friday.
