Australian Man Appears In Court On Murder Charge After Christchurch Attack

Three individuals had been arrested by the law enforcement in the wake of the attacks, the prime minister continued, adding that one of them, an Australian national, would appear in court later on Saturday, charged with murder.

"Lilik has been a valued part of our engineering team in Christchurch for 16 years, but he first got to know the team even earlier when he worked with our aircraft engineers in a previous role overseas", Air New Zealand Chief Executive Christopher Luxon said in a statement. "They have prevented further deaths and risked their own lives to do so".

Huang Yan, the manager of the Christchurch branch of China's Southern Airlines, told Xinhua the mass shooting would bring negative impact on New Zealand tourism as Christchurch has just been recovered from the aftermath of the 2011 deadly natural disaster.

Brenton Tarrant, charged for murder in relation to the mosque attacks, is lead into the dock for his appearance in the Christchurch District Court, New Zealand March 16, 2019. All injured are undergoing treatment at Christchurch Hospital. A couple apprehended at a cordon for carrying firearms not believe to be involved in the attacks, Bush said.

Before entering two mosques Friday in Christchurch, New Zealand, and opening fire on the unsuspecting worshipers, a man who made public his extreme white supremacist views had posted a 70-page anti-immigrant, Islamophobic "manifesto" on "white genocide", attempting to justify a massacre which is considered the worst in the country's history.

Speaking to reporters in Wellington, Mike Bush said by Saturday night all victims had been removed from the scenes of the massacres at the Al Noor and Linwood mosques.

"I convey the message of love and support on behalf of New Zealand to all of you", she said.

Victims came from across the Muslim world, including Indonesia, Malaysia, Turkey, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

Police say the number of people dead in the mass shooting that occurred at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand has risen to 50.

Abdikina Ali-Hassarn and his family moved to New Zealand from Somalia four years ago and were regular worshippers at the Linwood mosque.

Khaled Mustafa, a recent refugee from Syria, had also been killed at the Al Noor mosque, Syrian Solidarity New Zealand spokesman Ali Akil told news website Stuff.

Unlike the USA, the right to own a firearm is not enshrined in New Zealand's constitution.

Armed police were deployed at several locations in all cities, unusual in a country where levels of gun violence are low.

Tarrant was not known to the authorities, Bush said, and had no previous convictions. Ardern suggested "now is the time for change" and hinted she was closely looking at rules regulating ownership of semi-automatic weapons.

"I can tell you one thing right now, our gun laws will change", Ardern said.

Business Standard reports that Tarrant allegedly used "two semi-automatic rifles, two shotguns and a lever-action weapon".

"Unfortunately, we are all too familiar with the devastating effect a mass shooting has on a faith community", said Meryl Ainsman, chair of the board of the Jewish Federation of Greater Pittsburgh.
