His lawyers totally contradicted him. He also accused Trump of telling him to publicly lie about Trump's knowledge of the payments in February 2018, along with committing financial fraud. "He lied! Additionally, he directly asked me for a pardon", Trump tweeted. "He ended up lying and he has regretted it and he's going to jail for it, and he said to the court in his heartfelt way - I take ownership and I don't blame anybody but myself".

Davis, who was not Cohen's lawyer at the time, says Cohen "directed his attorney" to explore a possible pardon with Trump lawyer Rudy Giuliani and others on Trump's legal team. But the evidence so far shows that a broad range of Trump associates had Russia-related contacts during the 2016 presidential campaign and transition period, and several lied about the communications. Instead, President Donald Trump's former lawyer will be on Capitol Hill talking about the crimes he is now accusing Trump of committing.

It came as Cohen, 52, prepares to begin a three-year prison term in May, following his guilty plea to campaign finance violations.

Cohen's testimony Wednesday comes two months before he is scheduled to report to prison.

But the president's attorney, Rudy Giuliani, said that Cohen had lawyers reach out to him past year about the possibility of Trump intervening.

In his tweet, Trump, who has been seeking to discredit Cohen as he cooperates with federal prosecutors, referenced congressional testimony last week in which Cohen said he had never asked for, and would not accept, a pardon from Trump. He may also try to depose senior executives of the Trump Organization, including the president himself.

The Washington Post reported last week that House and Senate committee lawmakers are investigating talks Cohen had about a pardon, which they believe could show the president attempted to use his pardoning power to obstruct justice and dissuade witnesses from testifying.

Trump and Giuliani have repeatedly questioned Cohen's credibility. This is not the first time Cohen testified in regard to Trump; however, unlike in the past, Cohen was not there to protect Trump.

The president's attorneys were noncommittal during the conversation with Cohen's lawyer, the people said. That continues to be the case.

Once Trump's trusted fixer, Cohen has had a bad break-up with the President, over the hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

On Monday, the Democratic-controlled House Judiciary Committee launched a sweeping new investigation into Trump's inner circle, demanding documents from dozens of individuals including the president's sons Don Jr. and Eric and son-in-law Jared Kushner.
