Actress Lori Loughlin was in court Wednesday afternoon in connection with an alleged scheme in which wealthy parents paid bribes to get their children into top colleges.

"Full House" star Lori Loughlin appeared in federal court in Los Angeles Wednesday over her alleged role in the nationwide college bribery scandal.

Prosecutors allege the couple paid $500,000 to have their daughters labeled as crew-team recruits at the University of Southern California, even though neither is a rower.

Huffman, a former best actress Oscar nominee who is married to fellow actor William H. Macy, starred in the ABC TV series Desperate Housewives.

Huffman, 56, is accused of paying $15,000 disguised as a charitable donation to enable her elder daughter to cheat on the SAT, which she took in December 2017.

In an interview earlier this year, Macy said his daughter's college application process was a "stressful" experience. Giannulli was released Tuesday after posting a $1 million bond.

At least nine athletics coaches are among the charged - holding positions at Yale, Stanford, Georgetown, Wake Forest, the University of Texas, the University of Southern California (USC) and the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA). For that, she was charged with felony conspiracy to commit mail fraud and honest services mail fraud.

As The Daily Wire previously reported, Huffman and almost 50 other people, including fellow actress Lori Loughlin and many high-profile CEOs, were charged for allegedly bribing officials at various colleges and cheating on entrance exams to get their kids into the schools.

Prosecutors say the organisations effectively worked as a single enterprise to get students into college using fake athletics credentials.

In many cases, the students were not aware that their parents had arranged for the cheating, prosecutors said, although in other cases they knowingly took part.

IMG Academy in Bradenton said late Tuesday that 36-year-old Mark Riddell has been suspended indefinitely. In a statement, Yale said it has been the victim of a crime by its women's soccer coach, who is no longer at the university, and that the university is cooperating with authorities. "Here, [the documents suggest that the FBI] has recordings of phone calls with Ms. Huffman discussing the arrangement, including how the organization planned to hide the $15,000 as a charitable donation".

"Federal charges are always serious and unlike state court, they don't charge people unless they have a very strong case", Martin continued.
