The Australian federal police and Queensland police are at the airport, while airport line trains have been suspended.

Police interviewed the man last night but suffered a health issue midway through.

Passengers say they witnessed the terrifying scenes of a woman being chased by a man holding a knife, sending the terminal into lockdown.

Around 9pm, police were called to the global terminal following reports of a man in the food court, armed with a knife who was threatening a woman who is known to him.

The incident began in the terminal's food court when the man pulled a knife on a screaming woman and placed a fake bomb on a table. There were reports police fired shots before apprehending the man but the force has not confirmed this.

According to Fleming, there is no evidence to suggest the matter was related to terrorism and no one was injured during the incident.

"We understand there has been considerable disruption to Brisbane International Airport tonight, we considered it important to evacuate the airport and make sure we could render everything safe", Fleming explained.

The man was taken to the Brisbane watch house where he was charged on Sunday morning with staging a bomb hoax, making a false statement, assault, contravening a domestic violence order, stalking and stealing.

Police released the image today, Commissioner Ian Stewart said, to "show you what our officers faced and to reinforce that was don't shut down an global airport lightly".

Police said they negotiated with an Australian man of Middle Eastern origin before firing beanbag rounds.

He has not been publicly named and will appear in a Brisbane court on Monday.

Assistant Commissioner Peter Crawford said the tactical decision made at the time was suitable to contain the alleged offender.
