She said the influence of money in politics remains a problem and must be addressed.

"It's all about the Benjamins baby", Omar replied, referring to American $100 bills featuring the likeness of Benjamin Franklin. The Post reported that the GOP is trying to paint itself as the better defender of Israel and to increase its appeal to traditionally Democratic Jewish voters, at a time that dozens of liberal Democrats have been critical of Israeli policy. Her words are deeply hurtful and offensive, particularly as they build on a previous comment she made about Jews "hypnotizing" the world in support of Israel - another old trope born of hate-filled texts like the Protocols of the Elders of Zion.

The controversy started Sunday evening, when Omar responded to a comment about political leaders' support for Israel. A few Republicans have called for her to be removed from the House Foreign Affairs Committee.

Omar's statement came after a wave of criticism from Republicans and many Democrats, in which they called on her to apologise for using "anti-Semitic tropes". "No one should invoke anti-Semitic tropes during policy disagreements", said Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.).

The chairman of that committee, Democrat Eliot Engel of NY, issued a statement calling Omar's comment "shocking", and he promised to "shine a light on the evil of anti-Semitism and the danger it poses".

The statement released by Pelosi's office was issued on her behalf, along with Majority Leader Steny Hoyer, Majority Whip James E. Clyburn, Assistant Speaker Ben Ray Luján, Caucus Chairman Hakeem Jeffries and Caucus Vice Chair Katherine Clark. She has called the efforts to paint her as an anti-Semite a smear. "In the face of that abdication of leadership, Republicans will take action this week to ensure the House speaks out against this hatred and stands with Israel and the Jewish people".

The Amazon boss had hired a private investigator to look into whether AMI's revelation of his affair was "politically motivated". The Daily Beast reports that Bezos is investigating "how his text messages ended up in The National Enquirer ".

Democrats blasted Omar for her latest anti-Semitic remarks.

Her comments are now receiving backlash over social media, including from fellow Democrats.

The lawmaker said he doesn't "believe she would harbor those sorts of views as they've been characterized". Moderate Democrats who will be seeking re-election in closely divided districts in less than two years joined the chorus of outrage over Omar's remarks. Congresswoman Omar's statements are deeply hurtful to Jews, including myself. This kind of intolerance has no place in Congress-or anywhere in American society. "In the Democratic Party-and in the United States of America-we celebrate the diversity of our people, and the Gods we pray to, as a strength".

Omar, reported Breitbart, has acknowledged the tweet is offensive but has refused to apologize or delete it.

Indeed, Martin Luther King, Jr. himself was a prominent supporter of Israel, saying that "Peace for Israel means security", that "we must stand with all our might to protect its right to exist, its territorial integrity", and that Israel was "one of the great outposts of democracy in the world".
