Trudeau repeatedly pointed to private conversations he had with Wilson-Raybould to explain why he's surprised by her decision.

"It was a really positive step when Jody was appointed attorney general", said Terry Teegee, regional chief of the B.C. Assembly of First Nations.

In a similar fashion, the Director of Public Prosecutions Act gives the attorney general, a politician, the power to override the decisions of federal prosecutors.

Since then, Trudeau has denied he did any such thing. In her resignation letter she alludes to the controversy and said she is looking to determine what she can and can't say about it. "I expressed my disappointment to the prime minister in a meeting with him and other cabinet ministers the day of the shuffle".

Her exit came less than 24 hours after Trudeau said he had "full confidence" in her and suggested she would have resigned from cabinet on principle if she had felt anyone had tried to improperly pressure her.

"She's a fighter", he said. Wilson-Raybould says that must go on.

This major exemption, combined with the testy letter she released following Trudeau's decision to remove her from her role as AG, in which she made special note that Canada's legal system must "be free from even the perception of political interference", certainly raises some questions about Trudeau's involvement or lack thereof in the SNC Lavalin case. "She quite naturally sees the system very differently and not necessarily as working in the best interests of everyone". Stephen Harper waived cabinet privilege during the Mike Duffy scandal and Paul Martin did the same during the Gomery inquiry into the federal sponsorship scandal. He did say there was nothing wrong with Wilson-Raybould being involved in internal discussions about whether to let SNC-Lavalin avoid a criminal trial. "If he can throw open the windows and clear it up in a month or six weeks, people will forget".

Wilson-Raybould's resignation is likely to haunt the Liberals during the election campaign - as will a recently-launched probe by the federal ethics commissioner.

Minister of Justice and Attorney General of Canada David Lametti responds to a question during Question Period in the House of Commons Thursday February 7, 2019 in Ottawa. And he called Wilson-Raybould's resignation "a significant step backwards in our long-standing efforts to advance reconciliation".

The Liberals were already unlikely to win the Burnaby-South byelection coming February 25 after their candidate Karen Wang quit the race after making controversial remarks about the race of her opponent, Jagmeet Singh, he noted.

"Indians are still suffering, and they had a chance with one of the most brilliants Indians around", he said.

Recent statements from unnamed Liberal party insiders to the Canadian Press criticizing Wilson-Raybould's character have prompted backlash from all corners.

The Conservatives have taken to tweeting out the Liberal committee members' contact information, in a bid to have members of the public exert pressure on them. "I would have liked to see more concrete outcomes, especially on implementing the United Nations declaration on the rights of Indigenous peoples".

"It's tragic for her and I think it's tragic for the country", Wilson said.
