Dem Judiciary Rep. Jayapal: I Got the Sense Whitaker 'Wasn't Truthful'

House panel votes to authorize subpoena for Whitaker

Democrats have said they want to talk to Whitaker because he is a close ally of Trump and has criticized special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, which he oversees.

The House Judiciary Committee on Thursday voted to authorize a subpoena for Whitaker ahead of his Friday testimony. Nadler said that as late as last week the committee had received reports that some at the department were counseling Whitaker not to appear.

Rep. Doug Collins of Georgia, the top Republican on the committee, attacked the proceedings, calling it "nothing more than a character assassination" and "political theater".

Democrats became increasingly agitated at what they saw as Whitaker's efforts to run out the clock and control the hearing process.

"Although I can not speak about my communications with the president, I do want to make clear that I am personally committed to the integrity of the Department of Justice", Whitaker wrote.

"I am not your puppet, to repeat what you are saying", Mr. Whitaker responded.

Nadler made clear early Thursday that he did not want to have to subpoena Whitaker, but said a "series of troubling events" suggested it would be better for him to be prepared with that authority, just in case he decided not to show up for the hearing. "We have agreed to five-minute rounds", said Whitaker, seemingly surprised by the room's response. Nadler reminded Whitaker that the committee had submitted questions relating to the special counsel investigation and was waiting on answers.

Democrats have expressed concerns about Whitaker's previous partisan statements about the Mueller probe, his resumé and not being in the line of succession to succeed Jeff Sessions.

Jordan later asked if there are any other memos the American public can expect, to which Whitaker could not say.

"On November 14, 2018, as the incoming chairmen of the four House committees of jurisdiction, we sent a letter requesting that you produce eight categories of documents relating to your work on behalf of World Patent Marketing and your communications with Scott Cooper, the company's CEO and founder", the letter said.

The motion fell with a voice vote and Collins requested a roll call vote of all committee members.

Jamie Raskin, Democrat from Maryland, reacts as Whitaker tells the chair Nadler his time has expired for questioning.

Chairman Jerrold Nadler, D-N.Y., opened the hearing by criticizing Whitaker for going against the advice of Justice Department ethics officials and not recusing himself from supervising special counsel Robert Muller's investigation.

But Whitaker turned the tables. 'Mr. "Have you communicated any information in that briefing to President Trump?"

The retort came after Nadler had chastised Whitaker for evading questions and said that he wanted Whitaker to appear before the committee "in the coming weeks" for a private deposition.

"We had the show yesterday", Collins said. "But, to answer your questions, I have not talked to the president about the special counsel's investigation".

Democrats on the Ways and Means committee have taken the first step to obtain Mr Trump's tax returns, which he refused to publicly release during the 2016 campaign.

The dispute over Whitaker comes as Democrats leading other House panels also stepped up investigations of Trump and those around him, despite the president's warning in his State of the Union address on Tuesday that the nation's "economic miracle" could be stopped by "ridiculous partisan investigations".
