Record US meth haul intercepted by Australian authorities

Links between "violent" Mexican cartels and bikie gangs are being probed after authorities intercepted a billion-dollar ice haul bound for Australia.

The drugs were found concealed inside dozens of metal boxes that were declared as "Single Loud Speakers".

U.S. Customs and Border Protection said 3,800 pounds of the drug were seized mid-January at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex along with smaller amounts of cocaine and heroin.

In a statement Thursday, Customs and Border Protection officials confirmed almost two tons of meth were confiscated in Los Angeles last month as it was bound for Australia.

The haul is said to be equivalent to 17 million doses and worth an estimated A$1.29bn ($910m; £705m). The Americans were identified by Australian police as a 52-year-old man and 46-year-old woman living in Woodstock, Victoria.

"Removing 1.7 tons of (meth) before it reaches our streets will have a huge effect on the illicit drug market", said Australian Criminal Intelligence Commission spokesman Jason Halls.

On Thursday, police in Australia arrested six people in the states of Victoria and New South Wales allegedly involved with the US-based crime syndicate believed behind the record-breaking shipment.

"This historic seizure highlights just how important the U.S".

"They have been sending smaller amounts over the years, this is now flagging their intent".

Australian police indicated that the country's biker gangs, with deep involvement in organised crime, were willing interlocutors.

"The cartel is among one of the most powerful and violent drug trafficking syndicates in the world".

Three of those arrested in Australia will appear at Melbourne Magistrates Court later on Friday.

"By stopping this, we have ensured criminals will not profit from the huge pain these drugs would have caused our community", AFP Assistant Commissioner Bruce Hill told reporters.

Search warrants were also carried out by the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in British Columbia where a significant quantity of suspected proceeds of crime were seized.
