Trump Cites Indian-Origin Cop's Murder To Make Case For Border Wall

A man prepares to climb on the U.S.-Mexico border wall

"If his past statements are an indication, (the speech) will be full of malice and misinformation", House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and the senior Democrat in the Senate, Chuck Schumer, said in a statement.

In an eight-minute address on Tuesday night carried live by all the major United States television networks, Mr Trump said the federal government remained shut because of the Democrats.

"The situation at our southern border is a national security crisis. This is about whether we fulfil our sacred duty to the American citizens we serve", Trump said. He ordered U.S. troops to take up stations on the border.

Added Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer: "The symbol of America should be the Statue of Liberty, not a 30-foot wall".

There's been speculation - some of it seemingly stoked from inside the White House - that the public events may just be a prelude to a national emergency declaration, which could pave the way for the President to redirect money from the defence budget towards building his border barrier.

Other Democrats have also expressed dismay with the networks' decision to provide Trump with wall-to-wall coverage for his immigration speech when they failed to do the same thing for President Barack Obama when he discussed immigration. Some say Trump's hardline policies are slowing processing for migrants, creating an overwhelming bottleneck at the border.

"Now that the television networks have chose to air the President's address, which if his past statements are any indication will be full of malice and misinformation, Democrats must immediately be given equal airtime", they demanded in a joint statement on Monday night. The arguments were familiar - and some have already been debunked.

The wall was the first major promise of Mr. Trump's presidential campaign, and a rallying cry for his supporters. On Thursday he travels to the border. But in the most recent test, it did not work. It's just not clear what good it will do him.

While the number of families coming over the border has risen sharply, the number of border arrests - the leading gauge of how many people are trying to cross illegally - is actually one-quarter of what it was in 2000, dropping from 1.6 million then to 400,000 in 2018.

He went on to mention more crimes committed by illegal immigrants as he tried to drive home his point. He milked national television networks to deliver a divisive speech certain to rile up his most loyal voters. Journal is reporting that Trump is looking for ways to end the shutdown without it looking like the Democrats won.

Her fellow Republican senators, Susan Collins of ME and Cory Gardner of Colorado, issued similar appeals last week.

Mr. Dallek said Republican senators had reached a bipartisan deal to fund the government before Mr. Trump triggered the shutdown.

The precariousness of Trump's shutdown position has been evident in his dizzying rhetoric over the last month.

While its repercussions ripple across the country, Mr Trump has also threatened to bypass Congress and invoke emergency powers to build the wall along half the 2,000-mile (3,100km) border.

Multiple studies from social scientists and the libertarian think-tank Cato Institute have found that people here illegally are less likely to commit crime than US citizens, and legal immigrants are even less likely to do so.

Such a dramatic escalation of the standoff might allow him to access military spending to fund his barrier, which remains un-built two years into his presidency.

Some two dozen Republicans are expected to cross over this week and vote for the Democratic bills to re-open government, said a GOP aide who was not authorized to speak publicly.
