Former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak in a brief posting on his Facebook paid tribute to and gave the highest appreciation to Sultan Muhammad V on his service as the 15th Yang di-Pertuan Agong.

KUALA LUMPUR-Malaysia's King Muhammad V abdicated on January 6, the palace said, after two years on the throne, the first time a monarch has stepped down before completing their five-year tenure.

Malaysia is a constitutional monarchy, with a unique arrangement where the throne changes hands every five years between rulers of the ninestates headed by centuries-old Islamic royalty.

A statement from the national palace confirmed the resignation of the relatively youthful monarch, known for his fondness for four-wheel driving and other extreme sports.

His abdication is a first for Malaysia since the country gained independence from the United Kingdom more than 60 years ago.

In 2016, the Sultan of Johor claimed he had been offered the role of king, bypassing both Kelantan - Muhammad V's home state - and Pahang, saying he had rejected the offer out of respect for the rotational system.

Sultan Muhammad V is the first king to abdicate in the Muslim-majority country since it gained independence from Britain in 1957.

Malaysia's king, Sultan Muhammad V, has unexpectedly abdicated in an historic first.

During that period, photos that were said to be of the couple's wedding began making rounds online, with reports naming Sultan Muhammad's love interest as 25-year-old Oksana Voevodina, the victor of the Miss Moscow 2015 title.

Photos which reportedly show him getting married in Russian Federation appeared on social media in December, but the Palace has not commented on them.

It added that the king is ready to resume working on the development of the state of Kelantan, where he is Sultan.

The Council of Rulers will meet on January 24 to elect the new Yang di-Pertuan Agong and his deputy.

Royal officials in Malaysia have not so far commented on the reported wedding, or said what condition prompted him to take medical leave.

The sultan, 49, took leave "following treatment" at the beginning of November for two months.

Mahathir said then that he did not have official confirmation on the wedding.

Swearing in ceremonies for Malaysian kings are lavish affairs, marked by honour guards and Islamic prayers and attended by hundreds of guests in traditional finery.
