With Venezuela convulsed by crisis, Trump's hawks take dramatic turn

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro on Thursday directed his country's diplomats in the USA to leave that country and ordered the embassy and consulates there closed, also reiterating that United States diplomatic personnel must leave the South American nation within 72 hours.

Just two weeks after President Nicolas Maduro of Venezuela was sworn in for a second term, an opposition leader, Juan Guaidó, declared himself as the interim president on January 23, directly challenging the country's leadership.

We encourage other Western Hemisphere governments to recognise National Assembly President Guaido as the Interim President of Venezuela, and we will work constructively with them in support of his efforts to restore constitutional legitimacy. That prompted socialist President Nicolas Maduro, who has led the oil-rich nation since 2013, to sever diplomatic ties with the US.

"It is noteworthy that Venezuela's intelligence services and police are able to cope with large-scale protests, so it is important to make sure that the current situation remains within the framework of the police rather than army operations", he explained.

Luis Montilla, a steelworker, sees the American pronunciation as a violation of their sovereignty, and said, "the United States can't impose a president on Venezuela..."

Earlier on Thursday, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Russian Federation considers Maduro as the legitimate president of Venezuela and he warned against any outside attempts to usurp the supreme power of the country.

The United States argues that Maduro's re-election previous year was invalid due to widespread irregularities.

On Wednesday, violence flared once again in the South American country and at least 12 people were reported killed in the escalating confrontation with President Nicolas Maduro, who has drawn increasing worldwide criticism. Russian Federation reportedly sent military contractors to protect Venezuela's President Maduro as he faces challenges to his leadership.

Sarfatti is part of the Venezuelan diaspora in Canada looking anxiously at the political turmoil in their home country. He also urged troops to let humanitarian aid that the USA has pledged to send and which he has approved in his self-designated role as interim president into the country.

Meanwhile, US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo on Thursday asked security forces to protect the "personal integrity" of the self-proclaimed Venezuelan president and announced $20 million in US humanitarian aid for the Venezuelan "people".

A third source, who is close to the private military contractors, said there was a contingent in Venezuela but he could not provide additional details.

"They have no authority to carry weapons and to use those weapons outside the Embassy compound", said a former US official who is familiar with the USA presence in Caracas.

At least 60 countries have now thrown their support behind Guaido and the street protesters.

His remarks were followed by a protest as Medea Benjamin, the co-founder of peace group Code Pink who frequently disrupts official events, held up a banner that said, "Don't support the coup in Venezuela".

Many Venezuelans are awaiting Guaido's guidance on the often-beleaguered opposition's next steps.

There's a political crisis in Venezuela, here's Newsround's guide to what's going on. He has put himself forward as the new acting president.
