It took a while for Matt Kuchar to disentangle himself from a suddenly-crowded Sony Open leaderboard on Sunday, but when he finally put the hammer down, he did so emphatically and cruised to his second victory of the still-very-young 2018-19 PGA Tour season.

That left him chasing playing-partner Andrew Putnam, but Kuchar roared back to form on the back nine and carded five birdies, including three over the last four holes to cap an inward 30 and secure his ninth career title with a winning score of 22 under par.

Last season's Barracuda Championship victor was making seemingly everything at the Sony Open in Hawaii, including a clutch 20-foot birdie on the 13th hole Sunday to join the lead.

Kuchar maintained his lead through the back nine as Putnam began to trail by more with a bogey on the par-4 16th.

He closed with a 68 and moved into the top 50 for the first time in his career. Felt like I kind of had my B Game with the driving. "It is the golf I like to play to stay out of trouble", he said.

Kuchar had a 54-hole score of 193 in Mexico, the lowest of his career. "I was on the outside of a couple of things, and felt like I hadn't been used to being in that situation".

Putnam, who collected his maiden PGA Tour win at last year's Barracuda Championship, nailed a tricky three-footer for par at the last to clinch outright second on 18 under.

"Apparently, I need to go buy a lottery ticket today", Reavie said.

Lahiri, who is playing his first event of 2019, is now four-under 136. Along with his runner-up finish in the Sanderson Farms Championship last fall, he has almost as many FedEx Cup points as previous year when he finished at No. 130.

Four players finished in a tie for third at 17-under including Australian Marc Leishman and Canadian Corey Conners.

He at least made the cut, more than could be said for Jordan Spieth, who missed by a stroke despite a 66 for one-under. His 64-65 weekend gave him a tie for seventh, and he now heads off to Singapore with hopes of earning a spot in the British Open.

"Certainly a year ago was disappointing, but to win two out of three events is insane to comprehend", Kuchar said.

Andrew Putnam reacts to missing a birdie putt on the 16th green during the third round of the Sony Open PGA Tour golf event, Saturday, Jan. 12, 2019, at Waialae Country Club in Honolulu.

American star Spieth, meanwhile, struggled after opening the tournament with a three-over-par 73.
