Tim Paine's Australia touched a new low on Day four of the fourth Test against India when they were asked to follow-on by Virat Kohli after they got bundled out for 300 and trailed the tourists by 322 runs in Sydney.

Kuldeep, playing his first match in the series, picked up his second five-wicket haul in Test cricket, with his first coming against the West Indies at Rajkot in October of past year.

After the morning session was washed out, play resumed at 1.50 pm local time with 230 minutes lost to bad light and rain since day three.

Nathan Lyon faced just five balls before he was adjudged lbw to fellow spinner Kuldeep Yadav for a duck, a decision Australia decided against reviewing despite a question mark over whether the ball would have hit the stumps.

"Well bowled and congrats on your 5 wicket haul Kuldeep".

Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood, who was dropped on zero, combined for a final-wicket stand of 42 that spanned 14 overs but only delayed the inevitable.

Riding on the scintillating effort from Kuldeep, the Indian team also enforced the follow-on on the home team becoming the first team in last 30 years to do so against Australia Down Under.

Bowling: Mohammed Shami 19-2-58-2, Jasprit Bumrah 21-5-62-1, Ravindra Jadeja 32-11-73-2, Kuldeep Yadav 31.5-6-99-5, Hanuma Vihari 1-0-2-0.

India, needing only to avoid defeat to win the series, denied Australia any real possibility of a victory here by batting for almost two full days reaching 622-7 before declaring with Cheteshwar Pujara (193) and Rishabh Pant (159 not out) scoring hundreds. Starc finished on 29 not out.

Australia haven't completed a four-Test series at home without at least one player reaching three figures.

Australia will resume on six without loss on Monday, still without a century in the series and 316 runs adrift of India's mammoth first innings effort of 622-7 declared.

Australia 2nd Innings: Usman Khawaja batting 4; Marcus Harris batting 2.
