Heathrow Airport suspends all flights due to 'drone sighting' - latest updates

More than two weeks after operations were suspended at London Gatwick for reports of a drone sighting, a similar situation affected service through London's Heathrow Airport.

Heathrow resumed flights, a spokeswoman for Europe's biggest airport said, after departures were disrupted for an hour on Tuesday following reports of a drone sighting.

Speaking to the BBC, a Heathrow spokesperson said the airport's administration were working with the police to "prevent any threat to operational safety".

"Based on standard operating procedures, working with Air Traffic Control and the Met Police, we have resumed departures out of Heathrow following a short suspension".

Transport Minister Chris Grayling had been in contact with the airport concerning the drone sighting.

Helicopters can be seen hovering over the airport's departure runway with police officers also on the ground.

'We apologise to passengers for any inconvenience this may cause'.

Arriving planes, however, continued to land at Heathrow.

About 1,000 flights were cancelled there over three days due to the drone sightings.

Both airports responded to the Gatwick incident by ordering military-grade anti-drone technology.

Gatwick and Heathrow officials have pledge to invest in anti-drone technology, with United Kingdom transport secretary Chris Grayling saying to Parliament on Monday to extend drone exclusion zones near United Kingdom airports.

As the United Kingdom and Europe's busiest airport, and the planet's second busiest, any disruptions to flights will have noticeable knock-on effects for the rest of the world's air travel.

Frustrated passengers are taking to social media to express their frustration with the Heathrow drone chaos - with one suggesting "it was probably a plastic bag blowing in the wind". The government will also extend drone exclusion zones around airports.
