Putin's attack, and similar criticism of Trump's isolationist stance by French President Emmanuel Macron, capped an incident-packed buildup to the G20 that included flare-ups over Ukraine and Saudi Arabia.

Argentina's President Mauricio Macri, right, welcomes President Donald Trump to the start of the the G20 summit in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Friday, Nov. 30, 2018.

On the sidelines of the G20 gathering, created to concentrate on fiscal and monetary policy matters, U.S. President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping are slated to hold their first face-to-face talks since November 2017.

Hanging over the summit in Buenos Aires is the trade dispute between the United States and China, the world's two largest economies, which have imposed tariffs on hundreds of billions of dollars worth of each other's imports after Trump launched an effort to correct what he views as China's unfair commercial practices.

Describing Trump and Macri's closed-door meeting, White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders claimed that "the two leaders reiterated their shared commitment to face regional challenges such as Venezuela and China's predatory economic activity".

Leaders of the United States, Canada and Mexico, meanwhile, met Friday morning to sign a trade deal replacing the North American Free Trade Agreement that was struck following months of tough negotiations that analysts say left a bitter taste among the partners.

But despite the administration's public posturing, the U.S. economy has been showing signs of strain as of late with a volatile stock market and an announcement from General Motors this week that the United States automaker is poised to lay off thousands of workers.

"Just getting to know each other and so far so good, I think it's going to be a great relationship", Trump said in the meeting in Buenos Aires. "But, frankly, I like the deal we have right now", the president continued.

"In relation to Mr Khashoggi, we want to see a full and transparent investigation of what happened and those responsible being held to account", she said.

He said China wanted to make a deal but he wasn't sure that he did. "Way, way, way above my pay grade", he said.

Such a statement would endorse the Paris Agreement on climate change, repeating one issued at last year's G20 in defiance of Trump, who has yanked the United States out of the pact despite increasingly urgent warnings from scientists in advance of a UN climate meeting starting in Poland next week.

Trump was attacked for destroying the group's past unity on trade and climate change.

Two days after GM's announcement, the U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer released a statement saying he would "examine all available tools to equalize the tariffs applied to automobiles" between the U.S. and China at the president's direction.

However, delegates to the Buenos Aires talks said good progress had been made on economic sections of the final communique overnight.

European Council President Donald Tusk urged G-20 leaders to discuss "trade wars, the tragic situation in Syria and Yemen, and Russian aggression in Ukraine".

The day will also see a highly anticipated meeting between US President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose nations have been embroiled in an escalating trade war with new USA tariffs on China goods set to take effect a month from now.

Putin insisted on Wednesday that Russian forces were in the right to seize the Ukrainian ships last weekend, but Trump expressed "deep concern" at Moscow's actions against a USA ally.

Macri said the matter of the killing would be "on the table" during bilateral and possibly broader meetings.

The presence of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman at the summit also raised an awkward dilemma for leaders.

US intelligence agencies have concluded that the 33-year-old crown prince ordered the killing of Jamal Khashoggi, a USA -based Washington Post columnist and critic of Saudi Arabia's establishment, at the Saudi Consulate in Istanbul on October 2.
