Special counsel notes Flynn's cooperation

Flynn was a close adviser to Trump during the campaign - and famously led a "lock her up" Hillary Clinton chant at the Republican National Convention.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller has filed his long-awaited sentencing memo on former Trump national security adviser Michael Flynn.

But court observers say if Flynn satisfactorily cooperated with the special counsel, he could avoid prison time.

Trump's comments on Cohen contrasted with his expressions of sympathy for former associates caught in the web of Special Counsel Robert Mueller's investigation, including former campaign chairman Paul Manafort, who faces sentencing after convictions of tax and bank fraud charges.

The filing comes ahead of Flynn's December 18 sentencing and more than a year after he pleaded guilty to lying to the Federal Bureau of Investigation about reaching out to Russian government officials on Trump's behalf. In late 2016, the two allegedly spoke about the USA sanctions imposed on Russian Federation.

The filing details the series of false statements Flynn made to the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Justice Department. He belatedly registered with the Justice Department as a foreign agent for the work weeks after he left the White House. One knowledgeable source said the bulk of Flynn's cooperation with the special counsel occurred immediately following his December court appearance. His sentencing is set for December 18.

That "just below" phrasing seemed to indicate that the Fed is almost done raising rates for the time being. That suggested to many investors that fewer rate increases might be on the way.

Flynn participated in 19 interviews and gave the Mueller team "substantial" information.

Mueller's office did praise Flynn's character, saying his "record of military and public service distinguish him from every other person who has been charged as part the investigation".

Cohen, Trump's former personal attorney, pleaded guilty last week to lying to Congress about the president's business dealings in Russian Federation during the 2016 campaign. Manafort was convicted on multiple counts of financial fraud over the summer in connection with work he completed in Ukraine as a political consultant. Stone told ABC News on Sunday he would not testify against Trump and has not discussed a pardon with the president.

Cohen admitted in court last week that discussions about the Moscow Project did not end until June 2016, well after the presidential race got underway. Cohen, who once said he would "take a bullet" for Donald Trump, was for years Trump's do-it-all fixer who had a hand in several shady deals.

Flynn was forced to resign his post on February 13, 2017, after news reports revealed that Obama administration officials had warned the Trump White House about Flynn's false statements. He is now serving a 14-day prison sentence.

"The defendant has also assisted with the SCO investigation concerning links or coordination between the Russian government and individuals associated with the Trump campaign", it read.
