Partial Federal Shutdown Unlikely to End This Year

Senate adjourns until next week; no border deal

Pat Roberts presided over the Senate for a brief four-minute session Thursday, with the prayer by Senate Chaplain Barry Black alluding to the gravity of the shutdown.

Following weeks of failed talks between Trump and congressional leaders, parts of the United States government shut down on Saturday, affecting about 800,000 employees of the Departments of Homeland Security, Transportation and other agencies.

As Senate Democrats hold out on the votes Republicans need to pass the final pieces of government appropriations, just 25 percent of the adults polled support President Trump forcing the shutdown for the $5 billion he requested to pay for the wall.

"Democrats have offered Republicans three options to re-open government that all include funding for strong, sensible, and effective border security - but not the President's immoral, ineffective and expensive wall".

Trump's critics say that he is trampling over legally protected asylum rights and argue that resources should be channeled into higher-tech alternatives to a wall.

President Donald Trump listens during a signing ceremony for criminal justice reform legislation in the Oval Office of the White House, Dec. 21, 2018, in Washington D.C. They taunted Trump during their televised December 11 Oval Office summit, saying House Republicans didn't have the votes to pass Trump's $5 billion in border-wall funding, which they called the necessary first step for negotiations.

The president noted there is some border wall built already and that parts of the barrier merely need to be renovated while other portions will have to be built from scratch. Instead, it appears the shutdown could last until 2019. The Senate was set to convene later Thursday, but no votes werescheduled.

Interestingly, it was Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon who came up with a match-winning haul of eight wickets. What is wrong with his behaviour? We are definitely not looking to find something to talk about", he said.

- If the shutdown lasts past January 3, when Democrats take control of the House, Democratic leader Nancy Pelosi, who is in line to become speaker, said the chamber will pass a spending bill to reopen the government - without money for a wall. "Because of this, my income has been severely cut and I am unable to pay the entire cost of my mortgage, along with my other expenses". Independent agencies, including the Securities and Exchange Commission, are also affected.

"President Trump has thrown a temper tantrum and now has us careening towards a "Trump shutdown" over Christmas", Democratic New York Sen. "Federal employees don't go to work wearing red or blue jerseys".

"They're public servants. And the president is treating them like poker chips at one of his failed casinos", Warner said. As a result, important government work isn't getting done.

"We're nearly having a groundbreaking, it's such a big section", he said. Of that number, 380,000 have been told to stay home, according to American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE). Among federal union members, 40 percent identified as Democrats, 31 percent said they were independent, and 27 percent identified as Republican.

Trump added that he wants to have the wall in place "by election time", apparently referring to November 2020 when he is up for re-election.

And he did not offer specifics when asked who was rewarded the government contract.

Trump is showing no signs of backing down. "He's bold, he's keeping his campaign promises, and in this case, when it comes to building a wall, boosting border security, he's done exactly that", Rep. Banks says.
