"The cause of today's network issue is in certain nodes in the core network resulting in network disturbances for a limited number of customers across the world, including in the United Kingdom", she said.

"We'd encourage you to use Wi-Fi wherever you can and we are really sorry".

"As a result of this incident, we are experiencing a high demand on our network which means some customers may have issues making and receiving voice calls".

Swedish telecoms equipment Ericson, which is reported to be responsible for the outage, said: "We are aware of the issue and are working together with our customers to solve it as soon as possible".

Telefonica, the Spanish owner of O2, said more than 12 hours after the outage was noticed in London at around 5.00am that it had been assured by Ericsson that "full service will be restored for customers by (Friday) morning".

It said in a statement that the faulty software that caused these issues was being decommissioned.

Israeli PM Netanyahu should be charged with bribery
The prime minister has denied any wrongdoing, dismissing the accusations as a witch hunt orchestrated by the media. Netanyahu has been prime minister for a total of more than 12 years, from 1996 to 1999 and again since 2009.

"During the course of December 6, most of the affected customers' network services have been successfully restored", Ericsson explained.

O2's data network has gone down, leaving users unable to access the internet.

. The machines have been covered up until the issue is fixed.

O2 and Softbank Group Corp's 9984.T mobile phone unit, both software customers of Ericsson ERICb.ST , reported disruptions to data services on Thursday that affected millions of customers.

An additional seven million customers of Sky, Tesco, Giffgaff, and Lycamobile, which O2 provides services for, are also impacted.

Aside from being a huge inconvenience for data-hungry consumers, the O2 network outage is also causing issues for things such as public transportation and daily operations of local businesses. Here is what business professionals and mobile users need to know about 5G networks.
