Israeli Airstrikes Target Hezbollah Arms Depot near Damascus

Syrian air defense respond to suspected Israeli attack

In January 2013 Israeli planes hit a surface-to-air missile site and military complex near Damascus suspected of holding chemical agents, according to a USA official.

The Israel Defense Forces spokesperson has confirmed that the country's air missile defense system went into operation last night against an anti-aircraft missile fired towards Israel from Syria.

The attacks come after President Donald Trump said that America will withdraw all 2,000 troops from the country.

An Israeli military spokeswoman declined to comment on reports of a strike in Syria when contacted by AFP.

The ministry added that Israeli attacks seek to drag out the Syrian conflict and boost the morale of terrorist groups that confront Bashar al-Assad's government.

Syrian media said Israeli warplanes launched the Christmas Day strikes from Lebanese airspace.

The company had been accused of smuggling Iranian arms to Hezbollah in the past, but it was unclear whether the plane was carrying several Hezbollah officials who had allegedly boarded a plane at the same airport that evening bound for Tehran.

In February 2018 Israel hits Syrian and Iranian targets in a series of raids launched after an Israeli fighter jet crashes under fire from Syrian defences.

At the end of November Syria said its air defences had targeted and downed a number of "hostile targets" over the Kisweh area south of Damascus. Russian Federation says it is very concerned about Israel's attack. It said it activated its air defence systems to bring down a Syrian missile.

"There was an agreement that Lebanon will file an urgent complaint to the UN Security Council against Israel and will take a decision that will protect Lebanon and [its] citizens", said Lebanese Minister of Public Works and Transport Youssef Fenianos.

The Syrian military has revealed that the explosions heard close to Syria's capital Damascus overnight were caused by Israel air strikes on a weapons depot.

Israel has carried out hundreds of airstrikes against Iran, Hizbollah, and occasionally the Syrian regime as part of its campaign to prevent Iranian forces and their allies from entrenching in Syria.

Russian Federation announced it had delivered the S-300 air defense system to Syria in October.
