An official told TV that "the terrorist who carried out the attack was killed".

Rahmdel Bameri, a provincial official, told state TV that a suicide attacker driving a vehicle loaded with explosives drove up to the police headquarters.

While rare, Iran has been targeted in recent years by militant attacks. No militant group has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.

"India strongly condemns today's despicable terrorist attack in Chabahar, Iran".

Sistan-Baluchistan province, where the bombing hit, has always been a flashpoint, with Pakistan-based Baluchi separatists and jihadists carrying out cross-border attacks.

Al-Furqan in 2017 claimed responsibility for bombing an oil pipeline in the southwestern province of Khuzestan.

"As we've made clear in the past, such crimes won't go unpunished: In 2010, our security services intercepted & captured extremists en route from UAE", Zarif wrote in the tweet.

According to early reports, explosion and shooting were heard in Iran's southeastern port Chabahar near the Pakistani border on Thursday morning, at 9:30 AM. The perpetrators behind this dastardly attack should be brought to justice expeditiously. "There can be no justification for any act of terror", the ministry said.

Chabahar is also the site of a port complex, which is being developed in cooperation with India as part of a new transportation corridor for landlocked Afghanistan.
