Sandra Oh, Andy Samberg to co-host Globes

For some actors, including the casts of "Vice" and "The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story", Thursday morning's Golden Globe nominations announcement was cause for celebration.

A best-picture nomination for "Black Panther" would cap a decade-long effort to foster recognition for such movies, following a much-ridiculed proposal by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences earlier this year to introduce a new "popular film" category.

Every awards show provokes controversy in some manner, whether it happens with nominations, or the actual awards ceremony, or both.

The Globes are hosted by the Hollywood Foreign Press Association, which presents awards for film and TV.

In addition to announcing which films and television shows will vie for its year-end awards, the HFPA has introduced a new lifetime achievement accolade aimed at recognizing "the highest level of achievement in the medium" of television, per HFPA president Meher Tatna during the nominations announcement. Mary Poppins Returns should be a big success when it arrives in multiplexes on December 19, but as of now, the only widely-circulated nomination in the Best Comedy category is Crazy Rich Asians, which obviously limits public discussion about that batch of films. But when nominations come out and one of the best shows, let alone best comedies, on TV isn't nominated, I'm not sure what to call that.

Also winning double nominations were Cooper - for acting and directing in "Star" - and Lady Gaga, for acting and best original song ("Shallow").

Tyson Fury goes full Undertaker following THAT hook from Deontay Wilder
Fury refused to rage about the result, and broke into song before making his exit from the post-fight press conference. He also didn't do anything to dissuade the idea that he's still the best heavyweight in the world.

Actress, TV Series, Musical or Comedy: Kristen Bell, "The Good Place"; Candice Bergen, "Murphy Brown"; Alison Brie, "GLOW"; Rachel Brosnahan, "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel"; Debra Messing, "Will & Grace". This time around, its only nod went to Donald Glover, who was recognized in the best comedic actor category.

Kiwi actress Thomasin McKenzie was not nominated for her role in "Leave No Trace". So were Better Call Saul, Black-ish, Maniac, and The Little Drummer Girl.

Samberg is a former Saturday Night Live, cast member and a previous Golden Globe victor for television comedy series Brooklyn Nine-Nine.

"Westworld": Thandie Newton picked up a nomination for best supporting actress but "Westworld", which was nominated for best drama in 2017, was otherwise shut out. This year, she became the first actress of Asian ethnicity to receive an Emmy nomination for drama series lead, for Killing Eve. Another name others may not have been expecting in the same breath?

Vice topped all contenders on Thursday (Friday NZ Time), in nominations announced at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Beverly Hills, California, including best picture, comedy and best actor nominations for Christian Bale's almost unrecognisable performance as the former vice president.
