Alaska Governor Bill Walker told CBS News on Friday night that the state was just beginning to evaluate the extent of the damage.

The National Tsunami Warning Center has issued a tsunami warning for coastal zones of southern Alaska.

There was minimal structural damage Friday to Anchorage buildings, though some major roadways will need significant repairs. CNN reports that attorneys in the Nesbett Courthouse in Anchorage resorted to hiding under their desks until the seismic showed signs of letting up.

She said some roads in the Anchorage area, including some leading to the airport, are impassible, and drivers should follow detour signs to drop off and pick up passengers at taxi and shuttle bus queues. He said he wondered if Friday's quake "could be the one".

"The most striking thing about this event was that it was so close to Anchorage", Hayes said.

In a letter to parents and staff, Anchorage School District Superintendent Deena Bishop said that "many, if not all", schools sustained damage in the quake, and that it was securing its buildings to protect valuables that students and teachers left behind as they fled. Workers there were in the process of unloading fuel from a tanker when the quake hit, Falsey said. A driver attempting to exit Minnesota Drive at International Airport Road was not injured when the ramp sank. Traffic piled up for miles as cars inched past damaged areas.

She grew up in California and was familiar with earthquakes "but this was next-level", she said. It happened seven miles northwest of Anchorage, the state's largest city.

Earlier on Friday, a magnitude 7.0 natural disaster hit southern Alaska about 10 miles north of Anchorage. It had lasted several minutes and caused a destructive tidal wave across the entire West Coast, totaling some 130 casualties.

Alaska averages 40,000 earthquakes every year, with more large quakes than the other 49 states combined.
