US To Send Migrants Back To Mexico To Wait Out Asylum Requests

On Thursday, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen announced that Central American migrants seeking asylum in the US will be sent to Mexico while their cases are being processed.

They argue that many disappear into the USA and forcing them to wait in Mexico will cut down on what administration officials say are false asylum claims.

The new policy covers immigrants apprehended at border entry points, those who have been interviewed by USA immigration authorities and those who have received an immigration court date. On Thursday, the Mexican foreign ministry said Mexico had agreed to it on a temporary basis for humanitarian reasons, and it would affect those "who entered that country or had been apprehended at border entry points, and who have been interviewed by that country's immigration authorities and who have received a court date to appear before an immigration judge".

"As a result, "catch and release" will now be revised to 'catch and return, '" an administration official told reporters, speaking on condition of background in advance of Nielsen's testimony. Nielsen said on Thursday that Jesus, Mary and Joseph would have been eligible for asylum in the United States.

Unlawful crossings at the southern border have dropped dramatically since the late 1970s, but in recent years applications for asylum have ballooned and more Central American families and unaccompanied children are migrating to the US.

"While they wait in Mexico, the Mexican government has made its own determination to provide such individuals humanitarian visas, work authorization, and other protections", Nielsen wrote. The result was that an influx of migrants from Central American countries have been allowed inside the USA while their asylum cases wind through the immigration courts.
