What Trump Expects by Giving China a 90-Day Tariffs Break

Dubbing himself "Tariff Man", President Trump on Tuesday suggested the 90-day trade truce he and Chinese President Xi Jinping agreed to at the G20 could be extended while a broader deal was negotiated.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry says Trump and President Xi "reached consensus not to impose new additional tariffs and agreed to instruct the economic teams of the two sides to step up negotiations toward the removal of all additional tariffs"-closer to Trump's claim, but nowhere near as certain". Auto tariffs will be discussed right away in follow-up talks, Kudlow said.

"It hasn't been signed and sealed and delivered yet", Kudlow said.

Senior Chinese officials did not mention this deal in a news conference.

The president tweeted directly to USA farmers, some of whom have suffered as a result of Chinese counter-tariffs, to say "Farmers, I LOVE YOU!"

As tit-for-tat trade tariffs ratcheted up between the nations this year, China slapped retaliatory duties on US soybeans, pork and a host of other agricultural goods.

He said for the first time there was "a clear path" to reduce the U.S. trade deficit with China to zero.

Federal Reserve appears more cautious on interest rate hikes next year
That "just below" phrasing seemed to indicate that the Fed is almost done raising rates for the time being. That suggested to many investors that fewer rate increases might be on the way.

According to Trump, . he and President Xi are "the only two people that can bring about massive and very positive change, on trade and far beyond",. adding a solution for North Korea would also be a great thing for China and the rest of the world.

It's not clear. In its statement announcing the deal, the White House said China agreed to purchase a "not yet agreed upon, but very substantial, amount of agricultural, energy, industrial, and other product", and will start buying "agricultural product" from American farmers immediately. Trump jolted vehicle stocks by announcing a deal had been reached.

President Trump's self-proclaimed superhero status as "Tariff Man" does not impress Ben Shapiro. At the end of the day, two realities remain: the U.S.is now an energy (oil and gas) producing super power alongside the ranks of Russian Federation and Saudi Arabia, while China, conversely, is the world's largest energy consumer, which gives it less leverage in ongoing trade and even geopolitical negotiations and developments.

The comments by the president and his top advisers over the past 48 hours have only added to China's confusion about their negotiating partners. Per the president's post, a delegation of United States officials will hold negotiations with the Chinese side.

The only actual achievement so far, apart from a commitment to talk, was China's winning of an extension of the window before the proposed increase in the tariffs cuts in, which also pushes back the point at which Trump's threat to impose tariffs on China's remaining $US267 billion of exports to the United States might be imposed.

As reported by Reuters, fresh concerns are on the rise surrounding the temporary US-China truce that was struck over the weekend. Shares of major US banks also took a dive with Citigroup, Morgan Stanley and Capital One bottoming out at 52-week lows. In fact, the only definite thing to seemingly come out of the summit is the USA vowing to hold off on raising threatened tariffs for 90 days. Chad Bown, a trade expert at the Peterson Institute for International Economics, estimates that 12% of USA imports were covered by tariffs in September.

However, there are differences in both countries' official accounts of what was agreed. Let the negotiations begin.
