The United Arab Emirates reopened its embassy in Damascus on Thursday, marking a big diplomatic boost for President Bashar al-Assad from a US -allied Arab state that once backed rebels fighting him.

The statement said it was important that Arab states work to prevent any regional interference in Syria's internal affairs, to help consolidate security and stability in the country.

The United Arab Emirates embassy in Damascus after its reopening, the latest sign of efforts to bring the Syrian government back into the Arab fold.

In October, President Al-Assad told a little-known Kuwaiti newspaper that Syria had reached a "major understanding" with Arab states after years of hostility, adding that Arab and Western delegations had started to visit the country to prepare for the reopening of diplomatic missions. However, U.S. support for the rebels appears to be largely over in the wake of President Trump's announcement last week that he is pulling out all U.S. troops from Syria.

Analysts and experts agree that the reopening of the embassy is a fundamental step in the direction of a full rehabilitation of Syria by the Arab world. The reopened embassy marks the first state of the Gulf Cooperation Council to resume diplomatic work in Syria. Arab countries sanctioned Damascus and condemned its use of military force against civilians.

UAE 're-opens embassy in Syria' as Arab leaders begin to welcome Assad back from the cold

"Syria is a country in the heart of the Arab world and it's an indescribable country in the Arab world and this is an invitation to the Arab countries to return", he said.

Bahrain closed its Damascus embassy in 2011 after the eruption of the Syrian uprising and subsequent crackdown on protesters by Syria's Assad regime.

Egyptian state-run media have called for Syria to be reinstated.

The Emirates supported the armed groups of the anti-Assad opposition for a long time, although its role was less prominent than Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Turkey.

The same day, Trump called the $230 million in proposed US aid "ridiculous". The Syrian president estimates his country needs $250 billion to $400 billion to rebuild, according to Russia's state-owned TASS news agency.
