Apple plans to create 20,000 new jobs in the U.S. by 2023

In fact, of the seven cities in which Apple plans to expand or invest in new operations, Austin's homes are among the most affordable, second only to Pittsburgh.

Apple said on Thursday it would spend $1 billion to build a second campus in Austin, Texas, that will house up to 15,000 workers as part of a broader push by several United States companies to create more jobs at home.

While Austin, Texas, was the big victor in Apple's Thursday announcement of its plans for corporate expansion, Boston is getting a consolation prize.

There's more to come.

In a release, the Cupertino-based tech giant announced today it will open a new corporate office in Seattle, creating a workforce in the city of about 1,000 people over three years. After many small cities spent millions to lure the company, it went with New York City and the Virginia suburbs of Washington, DC.

The expansion comes six years after Apple signed a 10-year economic development contract in Texas, a move that put Austin at the front of the line for expansion, as member station KUT reported. Hundreds of new jobs will also be created at Pittsburgh, New York, Boulder, Boston and Portland, Oregon. Apple predicts its Miami office will double in size.

Apple's also planning to invest $10 billion to build data centers in the U.S. in the next five years.

The company says it is on track to meet its United States jobs target, after it created 6,000 jobs in 2018.

As it stands, 6,200 people now work for Apple in the Texan capital - the largest cluster outside its headquarters in Cupertino, California. The office will be just a mile away from the company's existing Austin location.

The company also argues that it can take the credit for creating and supporting more than 2 million jobs in all 50 states, including workers at 9,000 suppliers and manufacturers in the US.

Apple has a market capitalization of about $803 billion, making it one of the world's most valuable firms, but the company's stock price has been under pressure due to concerns about declining demand for new iPhones. He added that given the nature of the announcement, he expects the jobs to be in the high-tech space and unlikely to be additional retail jobs. Apple added 6,000 jobs in the USA this year alone and employs over 90,000 workers in the U.S.

Apple uses a lot of facilities overseas to produce components and its products, including China.

But Apple's already been hiring in Austin, especially in the latter half of 2018.
