A couple were killed after the helicopter they left their wedding in crashed in the US.

Will Byler and Bailee Ackerman Byler were killed when the helicopter departing their wedding crashed north of Uvalde Saturday, according to The Houstonian, the student-run newspaper of Sam Houston State University in Huntsville.

Ackerman and Byler had been classmates in university, where they were both members of the rodeo team.

As the wedding approached, she wrote: "This whole "bride" experience has been more than I have ever dreamed of".

"We ask that you keep the Byler and Ackerman families in your thoughts and prayers", the school paper wrote in a Facebook post on Sunday.

The helicopter had taken off a few kilometres away from the family ranch in Uvalde, Texas, where the ceremony was held.

People in the couple's community took to Facebook to share their condolences and remember the couple by posting photos of their engagement. "Absolutely ideal. Bailee & Will - I hope I find a love as true & wonderful as yours", the friend wrote. He proposed to her in a helicopter.

The couple was killed as well as the pilot, Fox News reports.

The National Transportation Safety Board is investigating the crash, which the agency said involved a Bell 260B helicopter that went down at about 1:47 a.m. Sunday about 15 miles outside the city of Uvalde.
