John Stones is wanted by Manchester City for the 'long-term', says Pep Guardiola

Despite the emphatic nature of City's victory, Guardiola admitted his side's defending can improve after Southampton squandered chances to narrow the deficit.

"The first season, he was scared".

Speaking after the game, the German winger said that "the whole team was really strong" in what was the biggest scoreline of the current Premier League season.

Guardiola's City now sit at the top of the Premier League table with 29 points, followed closely by Chelsea and Liverpool at 27 points each. "We were unlucky to come up against a Liverpool side that was on fire, but at the same time it was 10 minutes of madness that cost us the tie", Walker said.

- Sterling scored his 50th goal in all competitions for the club in what was his 153rd game and 126th start.

Goals from Raheem Sterling, Sergio Aguero, David Silva, Leroy Sane and an own goal from Wesley Hoedt condemned the Saints to a humiliating defeat.

One goal became two six minutes later as the division's highest scorers went through the gears, with Aguero tapping in at the back post for his landmark 150th Premier League goal following some good work from Sterling.

But he became the first of four victims for Jadeja and the left-armer returned to mop up the tail, finishing with figures of 4-34. So promising across the first three ODIs, West Indies' batting unravelled when a share of the series was still up for grabs.

Southampton headed into the match winless in six league matches and without a goal in five of them, and what was always going to be a hard task was made even tougher when conceding six minutes in.

"I want to share, of course, this award with the whole Manchester City family because I know it's a real family", said Guardiola.

Losing a player of De Bruyne's quality for three months - the time he will have missed by the end of his latest lay-off - in a single season would be enough to derail any club's title challenge, but City did not really miss him before and they were exceptional without him again. Junior Moraes, who has 14 goals this term, should lead the line. The Premier League champions netted six past the hapless Saints, who despite getting a goal back, were spectators for much of the match.

But City continued to threaten, and Sane nearly made it five with a vicious left-foot shot from the edge of the area that struck the bar just after the hour.

"We were aggressive in the final third, but we were lucky to score the goal in the last minute of the first half (through Sterling)".

Sane completed an impressive individual and team display in stoppage time when he steered in a left-foot shot from 18 yards following another assist from Sterling.
