First lady Melania Trump gave Fox News an exclusive inside look at the striking red-themed White House Christmas décor that she says represents the "bravery, heart, and patriotism" of the country.

When asked by Eric Bolling, a political commentator and author, if she gets "enough credit from the media", Trump replied, "They would like to portray different stories and focus on different, unimportant stuff really".

When it comes to Christmas at the Trump White House, the omens for vulgarity were good.

Made out of cranberries and other berries, the 40 "blood red" trees that line the East colonnade have divided opinion online, with people describing them as " terrifying" and looking like one of "the Circles of Hell".

Melania Trump's #BeBest campaign has been the target of criticism since it was announced, given her husband, President Donald Trump, is well known for his personal attacks on critics.

She also invited the crowd to come and view the trees for themselves.

"I hope everybody will come over and visit it", she said.

"Also, sometimes you need to fight back ― I'm sorry", she said to cheers at a summit on the opioid crisis held at Liberty University in Lynchburg, Virginia.

The First Lady hasn't always been able to rise above the fray. "You're all very welcome to visit the White House".

Mrs. Trump was speaking at a Liberty University "town hall" about the opioid addiction epidemic.

Addressing the opioid epidemic is a pillar of the first lady's Be Best youth initiative.

Her words were greeted with laughter, cheers and applause from the audience.
