Saudi-Led Coalition Says It Attacked Airbase, Missile Sites in Sanaa Airport

According to the World Health Organization, almost 10,000 people have since been killed.

Yemen's defenseless people have been under massive attacks by the coalition for more than three-and-a-half years but Riyadh has reached none of its objectives in Yemen so far.

U.S. defence secretary Jim Mattis and secretary of state Mike Pompeo have called for an end to the Yemen war, including air strikes by the coalition.

Amidst the United Nations warning that 7 million children in the country are facing a "severe" starvation threat, Yemen's government said last Thursday it was ready to re-start peace talks with Huthi rebels.

Addressing reporters at the world body's headquarters in NY on Friday, the secretary-general said the warring parties must seize on the "opportunity for peace" presented by UN-brokered talks scheduled to be held in Sweden later this month.

Cappelaere said efforts to come up with a solution in the next 30 days were "critical" to improving aid distribution and saving lives, adding that over 6,000 children have either been killed or sustained serious injuries since 2015.

Sanaa was mostly hit with airstrikes, while locals reported heavy clashes around Hodeidah, a vital port city that Saudi forces have been massing around all week.

Yemeni officials say fighting has escalated around the key port city of Hodeida, with more than 150 combatants killed over the weekend from both the rebel and government-backed side.

Washington, a close Saudi ally, supports coalition forces by refuelling their jets and selling them weapons. "Subsequently, coalition air strikes must cease in all populated areas in", Pompeo said in a statement. The rebels were using the air base to launch attacks on the kingdom with drones and missiles, the spokesman, Col. The Houthis, who drove the government into exile in 2014, control much of north Yemen, including the capital Sanaa.

Despite a high-profile modernisation drive aimed at improving Saudi Arabia's image and attracting foreign investment, rights groups have detailed a crackdown on activists, increase in executions and discrimination against the Shiite minority.

Earlier this week, the coalition sent more than 10,000 new troops towards Hodeidah ahead of a new offensive aimed at securing "areas liberated" from the Houthis, according to Yemeni government officials.
