Oddly enough, the American protesters faced off against a protest group on the other side of the border, protesting against the migrant caravan and in favor of Trump's immigration policies.

Over the weekend, violent clashes occurred as the United States attempted to stem the flow of people crossing into the country.

The head of United States Customs and Border Protection said border agents "prevented a unsafe situation from getting worse" when they fired tear gas at a group of migrants who rushed the US-Mexico border Sunday.

United States border patrol agents used tear gas to force the crowd back and shut the crossing - the busiest on America's southern border - for several hours, though it was back open on Monday.

The group was stopped by a chain-link fence topped with barbed wire and US Border Patrol agents firing tear gas and rubber bullets.

"[CBP] effectively managed an extremely risky situation involving over 1,000 individuals who sought to enter the U.S. unlawfully in large groups".

The Mexican government said later on Sunday it had retaken control of the border crossing after almost 500 migrants tried to cross the USA border "in a violent manner", and vowed to immediately deport Central Americans who attempt to enter the United States illegally.

Mexican authorities intervened, prompting a rush toward the border by some people, before U.S. agents fired tear gas.

United States authorities said on Monday that 42 people had been arrested for illegal crossing on the USA side of the border.

"What I saw on the border yesterday was not people walking up to Border Patrol agents and asking to claim asylum", Scott said.

The mayor of Tijuana said he has mixed emotions over what happened on Sunday.

Most of the migrants stumbled back into camp in the northwestern Mexican city of Tijuana, dirty, scared and with ripped clothes.

He wrote on Twitter, "Mexico should move the flag waving Migrants, many of whom are stone cold criminals, back to their countries. We launched tear gas into the area, which then caused the group to disperse, and we were able to get control of it", Judd said. On one hand, he said he is frustrated with those who are potentially putting children in harm's way by bringing them to the border not knowing what they will face.

He also accused people who are coordinating the caravan of intentionally displaying women and children to "pull the heartstrings of America", and said the media is playing along.

Mexico City has promised to ramp up security at the border.

Over the weekend, USA border agents shot several rounds of tear gas after some migrants attempted to penetrate various points along the border and threw what appeared to be rocks at US authorities. Others continued to approach the border and were repelled by more tear gas.

The data poses a challenge to the current anger over the Border Patrol's use of tear gas on Sunday to prevent a mob from busting through sections of old border fence in California. "Congress, fund the WALL!" Under US and worldwide law, an unauthorized crossing is not grounds to block someone from claiming asylum; neither does it change limits on the appropriate use of force.
