As Mueller has got closer to the heart of the Trump family's closely guarded financial secrets, the president has become more enraged.

Rosenstein has been overseeing the Mueller probe after Sessions recused himself from the investigation, but a Department of Justice spokeswoman said Whitaker would be "in charge of all matters under the purview" of the DOJ.

Whitaker has not been a fan.

Democrats also raised concerns about the appointment of Whitaker, 49, who will now oversee Mueller's probe.

According to United States media reports on Thursday, Mueller's team have started writing the final report of the investigation. The president's lawyers have argued he has vast privilege under the Constitution to hire or dismiss almost anyone within the executive branch.

The announcement set off a frenzy inside the White House, with Trump directing his White House counsel to call Sessions beforehand and urge him not to step aside.

"Attorney General Jefferson Sessions was a national disgrace, NORML hopes he finds the time during his retirement to seek treatment for his affliction of 1950's reefer madness", Erik Altieri, executive director of the National Organization for the Reform of Marijuana Laws, said in a press release.

If that stands, there are other ways that Trump and a newly simpatico attorney general could complicate Mueller's work.

A look at the responsibilities of the Justice Department's top two leaders and the special counsel running the department's most consequential and politically sensitive investigation. The day of action organized by the nonprofit progressive group MoveOn an dubbed the "Mueller Protection Rapid Response" had been pre-planned in the event Sessions was pushed out of office. If Mr Mueller files a report detailing his conclusions, the new acting attorney general could keep the document from ever becoming public.

Tectonic Tuesday: US fault lines to the fore in midterm polls
But there's a midterm election outcome scenario that is largely being overlooked by the markets. Ordinarily only two in five registered voters go to the polls in these contests.

"For me, I saw the impact of marijuana on our border", he said, presumably referring to his time as a USA attorney. It is not clear if an in-person interview with the president will happen. "Special Counsel Mueller must be allowed to complete his work without interference-regardless of who is AG".

In a CNN op-ed past year, Whitaker wrote, "Mueller has come up to a red line in the Russian Federation 2016 election-meddling investigation that he is dangerously close to crossing". Democrats cited his past comments about Mueller as evidence that he too must recuse.

Special Counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation is suddenly under threat in a way in hasn't been since it began.

Neil Cavuto countered that none of the three men are implicated in anything linking Trump and Russian Federation, as Mueller's original mandate appeared to intend.

Progressive activists denounced Whitaker as a political operative. Whitaker is Sessions' former chief of staff. He is from Des Moines and attended the University of Iowa where he played football.

Christie served as a U.S. Attorney in New Jersey from 2002 to 2008 and then as the state's governor from 2010 to 2018.

During a 2014 debate when Whitaker was running for U.S. Senate, he said appointed judges should have a "biblical view of justice".

During a 2014 primary debate for the Republican US Senate nomination from Iowa, Whitaker sympathized with patients who benefit from marijuana ingredient cannabidiol (CBD).
