Jeff Sessions Out as Attorney General

BREAKING Attorney General Jeff Sessions resigns at President Trump’s request

Republican lawmakers reacted to news of Attorney General Jeff Sessions' resignation with little surprise, while Democrats vowed to use their new House power in the upcoming Congress to dig into the president's reason behind the move.

Sessions' chief of staff, Matthew Whitaker, will be acting attorney general, Trump said on Twitter.

Legal experts suggested on Wednesday that though Trump may have fired Sessions to exercise more control over the Russian Federation investigation, the attorney general's ouster may have added yet another piece to a growing obstruction-of-justice case against Trump.

"It should end, because it is very bad for the country", Trump told reporters.

He also said on CNN previous year that he could see a scenario in which Sessions' replacement doesn't fire Mueller but "just reduces his budget to so low that his investigation grinds to nearly a halt".

It is an abrupt end to a hard tenure for Jeff Sessions, who was the first Republican senator to back Donald Trump in his quest for the presidency.

Tectonic Tuesday: US fault lines to the fore in midterm polls
But there's a midterm election outcome scenario that is largely being overlooked by the markets. Ordinarily only two in five registered voters go to the polls in these contests.

Sessions was an enforcer of much of the Trump administration's hardline approach on immigration and regularly praised the President's tough words on crime. The New York Times speculated that bypassing Rosenstein "might clear the way for Mr. Trump to fire Mr. Mueller".

After the special counsel was appointed in May 2017, Trump also channeled his fury toward Sessions, accusing him of "disloyalty."

Last year, Whitaker wrote an op-ed for CNN that accused Mueller's investigation of going too far.

Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who had said Wednesday morning that he expected the Senate's next term to be focused on confirmations, followed suit with his own statement wishing Sessions well and praising his "steadfast commitment to the rule of law".

He added that he was not surprised the House flipped to Democratic control.

The president also warned the Democrats against investigating him, after taking over the House in the midterm elections. He would not have nominated him, he said, had he known Sessions would recuse himself from the Russian Federation investigation. He also fired one of the president's primary antagonists, former Federal Bureau of Investigation deputy director Andrew McCabe, just before he was to have retired - a move Trump hailed as a "great day for democracy". Speculation has mounted for months over Rosenstein's fate, but Trump said in September that he wanted Rosenstein to stay in his job.
