FDA Approves Powerful Opioid Pill That’s 10 Times Stronger Than Fentanyl

FDA approves new opioid

"To what extent should we evaluate each opioid exclusively on its own merits, and to what extent should we also consider.the epidemic of opioid misuse and abuse that's gripping our nation?" Although the FDA has pledged to curb the on-going crisis, the statement made by the commissioner gives a clear insight as to how the agency will be moving forward with its drug evaluations.

The FDA also released a report on Friday detailing the severity of America's prescription drug abuse and addiction problem.

The Redwood City, California-based company expects the pill to be available early next year at a price of $50 to $60 per pill.

Other restrictions, according to the FDA, include that it cannot be used for more than 72 hours and will have the same black-box warnings as are required for all opioids about the risk of misuse and abuse that can lead to addiction and overdose death. In a statement, FDA Commissioner Scott Gottlieb, MD, sought to deflect criticism of the approval, saying that, "Looking beyond this particular drug approval, I believe that we should consider whether we should be doing more to evaluate each candidate opioid, not just as an independent review decision, but rather also to consider each novel opioid drug in the context of the overall therapeutic armamentarium that's available to patients and providers". The committee voted when its chair, Dr. Raeford Brown, who has publicly opposed the application, was not present, and FDA also failed to have the full Drug Safety and Risk Management Advisory Committee participate in the advisory committee meeting, Markey said. And many of those will overdose and die.

"This action is inconsistent with the charter of the agency", wrote Brown, who is also a professor of anesthesiology and pediatrics at the University of Kentucky's medical school.

The FDA says that controls on drugs inside medical facilities are tight and the greatest risk of diversion is among medical personnel themselves. Fewer than 1 percent of people said they acquired opioids that way.

Abrams on Sunday said that the difficulties faced by many first time voters has only galvanized more people to head to the polls. Two men protesting Kemp's immigration policy while Kemp was onstage were forcibly removed from the restaurant.

Gottlieb said Dsuvia, which is administered under the tongue through a disposable, pre-filled, single-dose applicator, "is restricted to use in certified, medically supervised health care settings - such as hospitals, surgical centers and emergency departments - for administration by a health care professional".

The drug is also only for use by patients who can not tolerate other painkillers, or for whom other painkillers have failed or are expected to fail.

AcelRx Pharmaceuticals, in a statement, said the drug was long in the making. The Pentagon has spent millions of dollars helping to fund AcelRx's research, public documents show.

"It's a huge mistake", Wolfe said.

Including brand name and generic drugs, there are almost 400 opioids now on the market.
