State's first female governor: Two women became the first in their respective states to be elected governor.

In a midterm election cycle heralded as the "Year of the Woman" because of the record number of female candidates for office and the surging #MeToo movement, women delivered a generally harsh verdict regarding Trump's first two years in office.

(5) Cindy Hyde-Smith won a plurality in MS and is heavily favored to win her runoff election to become the first woman ever elected to the US Senate from her state.

He hadn't had a challenger in 14 years, and now, a democratic socialist in favor of Medicare for all, a Green New Deal, and abolishing ICE, who happens to be 29-years-old, represents the 14th Congressional District of NY.

Women in key swing districts across the country delivered congressional victories to the Democratic Party Tuesday, helping to shift the balance of power in the U.S. House of Representatives for the remaining two years of the Trump presidency.

Going into the midterm elections, 19 per cent of the Governor, Senate and House seats were held by women. Democrat Janet Mills won the ME gubernatorial race and Republican Kristi Noem secured victory to be next governor in South Dakota.

Democratic Socialist Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez was elected to congress Tuesday night, which came as no surprise to anyone since she was running in a reliably Democrat district.

Ayanna Pressley became the first black woman to represent MA in Congress and will occupy the seat held by such lions as JFK and Tip O'Neill.

The death toll from the shooting inside a small Tallahassee shopping center now stands at three, including the suspect. Police Chief Michael DeLeo said that people who fought back against the gunman was "a testament to their courage".

As Breitbart News has reported, Democrats have increasingly gained strongholds in congressional districts due to booming foreign-born populations. Flake is scheduled to give a talk at the Forbes 30 under 30 event in Boston after recently calling for a one week pause in the confirmation process to give the Federal Bureau of Investigation more time to investigate sexual assault allegations.

Michigan's Rashida Tlaib and Minnesota's Ilhan Omar are the country's first Muslim women in Congress. Ayanna Pressley is Massachusetts' first Black congresswoman.

These new records represent the culmination of a record-setting year for female candidates.

Ocasio-Cortez's district, New York's 14th, has a foreign-born population that is now nearing almost 50 percent.

"Women voters were pivotal", said Molly O'Rourke, a professor of political communication at American University. On Tuesday, James won her seat for New York State Attorney General.

First female Muslim members of Congress: There are two women who won seats to become the first female Muslim members of Congress - Rashida Tlaib in MI and Ilhan Omar in Minnesota.

There was also an historic gender gap that showed women more supportive of Democrats than Republicans. According to exit polls, they were about evenly split this year, with 50 percent choosing Democrats, compared to 48 percent who chose Republicans. "Democrats took the House back because of women voters".

"Thanks to you, tomorrow will be a new day in America", Nancy Pelosi, House Democratic leader, said.
