Oscar became a tropical storm Saturday and was designated the eighth hurricane this season.

The Miami-based National Hurricane Centre (NHC) said Oscar was expected to continue in a westerly direction overnight, followed by a turn towards the west-northwest by early Monday, with a northwestward motion forecast on Monday afternoon.

A cyclone is a closed-circulation rotating storm that depending on its wind-speed intensity is classified, from weakest to strongest, as a tropical depression, tropical storm or hurricane.

Tropical Storm Oscar became Hurricane Oscar, officials with the National Hurricane Center said on October 28.

NBC officially cancels ‘Megyn Kelly Today.’ This is who will replace her.
Back then, she took over the " Today " time slot held by Al Roker and Tamron Hall , leading to Hall's sudden exit from NBC.

Maximum sustained winds have increased to near 50 miles per hour with higher gusts. Oscar is still moving toward the west at 16 miles per hour. The storm is expected to become a hurricane Sunday as its track curves toward the North Atlantic, the National Hurricane said.

Subtropical storms have less defined and cooler centers than tropical storms.

There is a new low-pressure system, centered about 1,200 miles east-northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the central Atlantic.
