Dr Strickland, along with Arthur Ashkin, from the U.S. and Gérard Mourou, from France, were awarded the prize on Tuesday "for groundbreaking inventions in the field of laser physics".

Arthur Ashkin of Bell Laboratories in the United States won half of the 2018 prize for inventing "optical tweezers" while Strickland shares the remainder with Frenchman Gerard Mourou, who also has US citizenship, for work on high-intensity lasers.

Optical tweezers grab viruses and other living cells "with their laser beam fingers", the Nobel committee explained. The other two notable women winners were Maria Goeppert-Mayer, awarded in 1963, and Marie Curie, awarded in 1903.

A major breakthrough came in 1987 when Ashkin used the tweezers to capture living bacteria without harming them, the Academy noted. And you do always wonder if it's real.

After winning the award, Donna Strickland said, "We need to celebrate women physicists because they're out there..."

A Canadian has professor ended a 55-year drought for female physicists after being awarded the prestigious Nobel Prize for physics. The team created ultrashort, high-intensity laser pulses, essentially packing more light than standard lasers in the same tiny space. Although Ashkin retired from Bell Labs in 1992, he is active in his home laboratory. It also found a use in laser therapy targeting cancer and in the millions of corrective laser eye surgeries which are performed each year.

His anger was reserved for the committee Democrats. "I am here today not because I want to be", said the married mother-of-two. The White House confirmed that Trump watched the testimony aboard Air Force One as he returned to Washington from NY .

Ashkin, who in 1987 had used the tweezers to capture living bacteria without harming them, is the oldest victor of a Nobel prize, beating American Leonid Hurwicz, who was 90 when he won the 2007 Economics Prize.

Strickland conducted her Nobel-winning research while a PhD student under Mourou in 1989 at the University of Rochester in NY. "I thought there might have been more..."

With CPA, Mourou and Strickland shattered this wall, sparking a trend that allowed lasers to, on average, double in intensity twice per decade.

Chirped pulse amplification stretches, intensifies, and then compresses light for an ultra-short high intensity laser pulse.

Last year's physics prize went to three Americans who used abstruse theory and ingenious equipment design to detect the faint ripples in the universe called gravitational waves.

2012 - Serge Haroche and David J Wineland were awarded the prize for their work with light and matter. What we are looking at is actually a bad failure that has only now begun to rectify itself: that of the Nobel Committee having ignored female candidates for the prize for half a century.
