By the weekend, though, Miriam is expected to weaken back into a tropical storm and either continue to weaken or dissipate by Labor Day.

As of 11 a.m. Wednesday, Hurricane Miriam featured 75 mph winds with higher gusts and was tracking west at 9 mph about 1,090 miles east-southeast of Hilo, according to forecasters at the Miami-based National Hurricane Center.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 45 miles from Norman's center.

But rain was still pounding the island chain, touching off flooding on Oahu and Kauai.

Miriam is forecast to become a hurricane this evening and into Thursday. NASA research has shown that storms with cloud top temperatures that cold (that are very high in the troposphere) have the capability to generate heavy rain. The NHC is keeping an eye on a tropical wave (or disturbance) moving off the west African coast.
