Trump signals nuclear talks with North Korea still alive

Trump appears to be paling up with Kim, with the North Korean leader telling officials he has "unwavering faith" in the U.S. president. "We will get it done together!"

Chung did not elaborate on the message from Kim, but said the North Korean leader had expressed exasperation because he felt that North Korea's efforts to achieve denuclearization were being undervalued.

Earlier Thursday, North Korean media said that Kim Jong Un had called for further efforts to "realize the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula" during meetings with the envoys.

The development followed a recent halt in negotiations between Washington and Pyongyang.

After their June summit in Singapore, Trump and Kim issued a vague statement about a nuclear-free peninsula without describing when and how it would occur.

Trump said he thinks it is going to be a "positive letter".

Another professor, Kim Joon-hyung of Handong University, found it significant that Kim did not link his Korean War peace treaty proposal to the removal of US troops from the Korean peninsula.

At a landmark June summit in Singapore between Trump and Kim in, the two leaders pledged to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula but no details were agreed.

But Pyongyang has slammed Washington for its "gangster-like" demands for complete nuclear disarmament.

PYONGYANG, Korea, Democratic People's Republic Of - North Korea is bringing back one of its most iconic art forms - mass games performed by tens of thousands of people working in precise unison - to mark its 70th anniversary this weekend.

This is the first time the North Korean leader laid out a potential deadline for dismantling nuclear weapons, the development of which pushed the region to the brink of military confrontation a year ago.

Some foreign affairs experts say North Korea is willing to promote talks with the United States with the backing of the two neighbouring friendly countries.

Kim told Chung that work to dismantle the only missile engine test site in North Korea "means a complete suspension of future long-range ballistic missile tests".

The phrase "complete denuclearization" - a term long preferred by North Korea - could be read to preclude nuclear-capable US bombers and submarines from operating near South Korea. North Korea's Foreign Ministry on Tuesday published a lengthy statement on its website saying that an end-of-war declaration would be a necessary trust-building step between the wartime foes that would "manifest the political will to establish the lasting and stable peace regime on the Korean Peninsula".

Pompeo, who is now visiting India, was a tad less enthusiastic.

"The withdrawal of the USA forces, the end of the US military presence and domination is the demand of the Korean nation and the irresistible trend of the times", it said.

"Looks like Kim is trying to wash away worries that talks could stall or fail, knowing well that Washington is losing patience", said Koh Yu-hwan, a professor of North Korean Studies at Dongguk University in Seoul.

"This trust, despite some difficulties surfaced during the negotiation process between the United States and the North, will continue", Chung said on Thursday, acknowledging the recent unpleasantness.
