SpaceX has finally revealed who it's sending to the moon on its Big Falcon Rocket.

A mockup of the Crew Dragon spacecraft is displayed during a media tour of SpaceX headquarters and rocket factory in Hawthorne, California.

Maezawa hasn't selected which artists will join him on the four to five-day journey, which will send his craft around the Moon and back to Earth.

Toward the end of the event, a reporter in the room asked Musk about his own plans to fly in space.

"Only 24 humans have been to the Moon in history", SpaceX said on Twitter, adding that no one has visited the moon since the last Apollo mission in 1972. SpaceX expects Maezawa, 42, to be the first private passenger to make the journey that only two dozen astronauts have been on during the Apollo era that ended 46 years ago. The mission is now scheduled for 2023, so Maezawa will have some time to gather his dream team. "I would like to invite six to eight artists from around the world to join me on this mission to the Moon", he said.

"This has done a lot to restore my faith in humanity - that somebody's willing to do this", Musk said.

However, Musk did say that Maezawa brought the idea to him and that the Japanese billionaire's money will help fund development of Big Falcon Rocket, or BFR, which the company plans to use for the lunar flight - and eventually, for a flight to Mars. The mission is slated to take flight in 2023. The SpaceX and Tesla CEO framed the trip around the moon as an important part of the company's larger mission to colonize Mars. Its last rocket, the Falcon Heavy, had its first successful launch almost five years later than planned.

Maezawa appear unfazed, talking about fusing his love of art and expression and a lifelong dream of going into space aboard SpaceX's BFR rocket.

Musk said: "The objective for SpaceX, the reason for creating SpaceX, was to accelerate the advent of humanity becoming a space-faring civilisation; to help advance rocket technology to a point where we could potentially become a multi-planet species and a true space-faring civilisation".

No guidance has been given on when the moon flight could happen.

The trip to the moon on the SpaceX rocket could take place as early as 2023.
