Serena fined $17000 after US Open final outburst

Serena Williams- Sexism claim is a red herring – Serena Williams should apologise after overshadowing Naomi Osaka's big moment

Serena Williams, right, talks with referee Brian Earley during the women's final of the US Open tennis tournament against Naomi Osaka, of Japan, Saturday, September 8, 2018, in NY. Williams had an argument with chair umpire Ramos after he initially issued a warning for a code violation in the second game of the second set for receiving coaching, which is not allowed during Grand Slam matches.

"The WTA believes that there should be no difference in the standards of tolerance provided to the emotions expressed by men vs. women and is committed to working with the sport to ensure that all players are treated the same".

Williams argued that although she did called Ramos a "thief", male players who have been even more abusive towards an umpire in the past were not punished in the same way.

World tennis chiefs need to clarify their position on in-match coaching to prevent another incident after Serena Williams' US Open meltdown, the head of the Australian Open said Monday.

Serena was also penalised for breaking her racket in anger.

Osaka won the final but her victory was overshadowed by the on-court drama and booing of officials during the trophy ceremony.

In an interview with GQ, it was noted that one of the first things she mentioned was Overwatch, a popular video game.

The tennis superstar was docked a game for insulting the umpire after she called him "a liar" and "a thief" in an angry tirade on Saturday. This prompted a heated dialogue with the umpire Carlos Ramos.

It's (bleeping) going to be hard to do. "I think that not pushing things too hard and not pushing it too far early was key". Also, we will see how Brady performs with some limited weapons at wide receiver with Julian Edelman being suspended.

"As for Serena, she knows I love her". Inspired by the Williams sisters, her father began coaching her early on.

'(He could have said), "Hey, we're getting out of hand here, let's tone it down".

Tennis star Serena Williams has opened the world of professional sports to new charges of sexism and sparked debate with her headline-grabbing dispute with a U.S. Open umpire and claims of discrimination as she faces $17,000 in fines. "I've never cheated in my life", Williams said. "She is at the forefront of the next generation in women's tennis, someone possessing quite a mixture of powerful serve and strokes, enviable court speed and a preternatural calm".

"Osaka is taking on the power tennis of the women's game with power of her own - an Asian player, a Japanese player", said Date, who retired a year ago at the age of 46. Thank you, @serenawilliams, for calling out this double standard.

Just before the U.S. Open, the French Tennis Federation president said the black cat suit worn this year by Williams at the French Open would not be allowed at that tournament in the future.

I think Serena overreacted, I think that outburst was unwarranted and I can't help but think that a lot of it had to do with the heat that was coming from the other side of the net.

Williams was most incensed by the first code violation she received - for coaching from her box. It's hard to generalize things, really.
