'Harvey of the East Coast:' Florence's worst impact could be catastrophic flooding

\'Life-Threatening\' Hurricane Florence Now Forecast to Bring \'Catastrophic\' Flooding

Two years ago, more than a million poultry birds died when floodwaters from Hurricane Matthew covered areas across central and eastern North Carolina.

Watches are already in effect for a storm surge that could reach up to 12ft at high tide on a stretch from Cape Fear to Cape Lookout in North Carolina, forecasters said.

The center reported late Tuesday night that Florence was roughly 670 miles east-southeast of Bald Head Island with maximum sustained winds of 140 mph.

While Florence is expected to strengthen as it approaches the Carolina coast, the storm will weaken before it makes landfall. A hurricane warning was posted for most of the Carolina coast north to the Virginia border. It's now predicted to make landfall somewhere north of Wilmington, N.C., before its center heads inland toward the cities of Raleigh and Durham. "Preparations to protect life and property should be rushed to completion". It is now blowing with 130 miles per hour winds.

"If we get more than 25 inches of rain, then we'll start to be concerned", he said. Also, it is unlikely the Knights will be able to replace the North Carolina contest with another game as the Knights don't have a true open date.

The United States was hit with a series of high-powered hurricanes past year, including Hurricane Maria, which killed some 3,000 people in Puerto Rico, and Hurricane Harvey, which killed about 68 people and caused an estimated $1.25 billion in damage with catastrophic flooding in Houston.

North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper said his state is "in the bullseye" and urged people to "get ready now". Once Florence makes landfall we'll have a better idea in Virginia what we'll be dealing with.

"Where else can we go?" Some isolated areas could get 30in, forecasters said.

Florence Now A Major Category 4 Hurricane
Florence's max sustained winds have been clocked at 130 miles per hour with an further increase expected on Monday. The hurricane has already reached category 4 , with winds up to 130 miles per hour. "I'd say get ready".

Virginia's governor ordered a mandatory evacuation for some residents of low-lying coastal areas, while some coastal counties in North Carolina have done the same.

"This is going to produce heavy rainfall, and it may not move very fast". The hurricane center predicts a "heavy rainfall event, which may extend inland over the Carolinas and Mid-Atlantic for hundreds of miles".

"NC State will not play its scheduled football game with West Virginia University this weekend due to the increasing likelihood of severe and unsafe conditions associated with Hurricane Florence", said NC State's release on Tuesday.

"That's good news and bad news", he said.

More than 1 million people were ordered to evacuate their homes along the US southeast coast as Hurricane Florence, the most powerful storm to threaten the Carolinas in almost three decades, barreled closer on Tuesday. Most trees will be snapped or uprooted and power poles downed. That means that once rainfall begins late this week, it could continue into early next week, with flooding possible anywhere from the Appalachian Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. "Most of the area will be uninhabitable for weeks or months". At that level, it would still cause "devastating damage", according to the Saffir-Simpson scale.

In addition to Florence, the Atlantic Ocean now has two other strong storms.

Meanwhile, the Lesser Antilles are watching Tropical Storm Isaac, which was downgraded from a hurricane earlier Tuesday.

Farther to the east, Hurricane Helene is now a Category 2 storm, but it's expected to curve harmlessly northward and weaken in the central Atlantic.
