"My sister-in-law and Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom Nawaz has passed away", he tweeted.

He and the couple's daughter Maryam Nawaz had left her in London and returned to Pakistan on July 13 this year in a bid to motivate support for the PML-N days before a general election.

It is pertinent to note that deposed prime minister Nawaz Sharif, his daughter Maryam Nawaz and her spouse Safdar, were convicted by an accountability court in the Avenfield reference case on July 6.

Nawaz Sharif was in London with Kulsoom earlier this year when the anti-corruption court handed him a 10-year jail term and sentenced his presumed political heir, Maryam, to seven years in prison over the purchase of luxury flats in London in the 1990s.

Nawaz Sharif and Maryam were informed about the tragedy by authorities at the Adiala Jail where the two, along with Maryam's husband Captain (r) Muhammad Safdar, are now serving their sentences in the Avenfield illegal assets reference.

The news was confirmed by PML-N president Shehbaz Sharif.

Begum Kulsoom was under treatment at London's Harley Street Clinic since June 2017.

Following her death, politicians from both sides of the aisle - including Pakistani Foreign Minister Shah Mehmood Qureshi, President Arif Alvi, and numerous members of the PML-N - offered condolence messages to the Sharif family via Twitter.

The information minister said that Kulsoom's sons Hassan and Hussain will be arrested upon their return to Pakistan, however, they will not be arrested if they obtain pre-arrest bails.

She would not take to politics again until past year, after her husband - now prime minister again - was disqualified by the Supreme Court from holding a public office.

She was elected as an MP in 2017 after standing in for Nawaz Sharif.

Expressing grief and heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, the COAS prayed, "May Allah bless the departed soul eternal peace at heaven, amen".
