Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said that new tariffs on $200 billion in Chinese goods could be imposed "very soon depending on what happens".

China's trade surplus with the United States ballooned to a new record $31 billion in August despite a raft of USA tariffs, official data showed Saturday, adding fuel to the flames of a searing trade war.

While Apple did not offer an estimate of how much Trump's China tariffs would increase costs of production, the company argued that the tariffs will only hurt American consumers and companies, without curbing China's technology policies. The company is concerned, however, about the Trump administration's proposal to add 25 percent duties on another $200 billion in Chinese goods, including a wider assortment of consumer-related items. And I hate to say this, but behind that is another $267bn ready to go on short notice if I want. "That totally changes the equation".

Chinese officials acknowledged Chinese exporters have been rushing out shipments to beat new US tariffs, buoying the headline growth readings, while some companies such as steel mills are diversifying and selling more products to other countries. Tariffs are also proposed on finished fabric products made by Chinese companies that directly compete with Rockland's finished offerings in the US market.

Dell, Cisco, Juniper Networks and Hewlett Packard Enterprise wrote a joint letter to the U.S. Trade Representative seeking an exemption from $200 billion in new tariffs. According to a report in The Verge, Apple asked that the USA revise its proposal and decline to place tariffs on the product categories that cover these devices. The administration already imposed duties on $50 billion of Chinese imports. "It would cause broad, disproportionate economic harm to United States interests", the letter said. Apple said the tariffs would raise the cost of its US operations and put it at a disadvantage to foreign rivals.

Here's the scorecard on Trump's trade war with China.

Salisbury attack approved at senior level in Moscow, says May
Russia's top security officials routinely speak of active attempts by the CIA and other Western agencies to recruit Russians. May said the attack "was not a rogue operation" and was nearly certainly approved at a "senior level of the Russian state".

That would cover virtually all the goods imported from the world's second largest economy. It also has a sizable business in China, which the Chinese could target in retaliation for USA trade actions. It has announced a $60 billion list of American products targeted for retaliation. The tariffs would pressure China to stop that behavior, the administration has said.

Reuters reported in July that the Apple Watch was likely to be affected by the tariffs. Doing so would escalate a confrontation between the world's two biggest economies and likely squeeze USA companies that import everything from handbags to bicycle tires.

Apple is among the most vulnerable US companies amid rising trade tensions, trade experts say.

This morning on Twitter, Trump urged Apple to build new manufacturing plants here in the U.S. to avoid the tariffs.

Some business groups greeted the president's latest tariff threats with dismay.
