Melania Trump’s parents become US citizens, using 'chain migration' Trump hates

Melania Trump's parents are sworn in as U.S. citizens

The pair had been living in the U.S. on green cards sponsored by their daughter Melania.

Melania Trump, the former Slovenian model, was able to help her parents, Viktor and Amalija Knavs, 73 and 71, obtain permanent residence likely through "chain migration" processes, Axios reports.

Asked by the New York Times if the couple had become citizens through "chain migration", Wildes answered "I suppose".

"I can not comment on the president's politics when it comes to my clients but I have stood up against the president's immigration policies personally", the lawyer said.

The president often rails against family-based immigration at his rallies, and has called it a pathway for terrorists to enter the country.

Melania changed her name to Knauss when she began modeling.

Under immigration statutes, the Knavses would have needed to have their green cards for at least five years in order to apply for citizenship, along with fulfilling character, residency and civic knowledge requirements, it said.

Chelsea needed Jorginho more than Man City - Sarri
Sarri, who has not won a trophy in his career, said: "The match for us is very hard for one reason: they have worked all together for two years".

The AP writes that arriving at the ceremony, the Knavses "slipped in and out of a side entrance at a Manhattan federal building flanked by Department of Homeland Security police". "The application, the process, the interview was no different from anyone else's other than the security arrangements", their attorney Michael Wildes said on Thursday. The Slovenian couple had been living in the U.S as permanent residents.

Trump hasn't commented or tweeted about his in-laws' newfound citizenship. The first lady herself was granted citizenship in 2006.

However it's unclear whether their green cards were granted by a process the President has sought to end. According to news reports, Melania came to the USA in 2001 on a so-called Einstein visa for "individuals of extraordinary ability" as a model. And yet, here are his wife's parents, gladly getting the USA citizenship that their son-in-law wants to virtually bring to an end within the next couple of years.

Melania grew up in a two bedroom apartment in Sevnica, a small city formerly under communist control. Viktor was a auto dealer; Amalija worked in a factory.

She settled in NY in 1996 and met Mr. Trump two years later.

It is not infrequently the site of protests, but on Thursday, things were quiet as the first lady's parents came and went.

Mr Knavs is 74, two years older than President Donald Trump.
