Saudi Arabia's decision to order students to leave Canada is expected to impact schools across the country, including the University of Victoria.

The issue that led to this diplomatic impasse involves Saudi police arresting human-rights activist Samar Badawi and others last week.

Riyadh said that amounted to "a blatant interference in the Kingdom's domestic affairs, against basic global norms and all worldwide protocols".

"We do believe that this is because of continuous pressure and visibility on Raif's case so we're really hoping that more states speak out on Samar Badawi and all other activists".

He received his first 50 lashes past year, according to HRW.

The Kingdom of Bahrain posted a statement on its website affirming its "full solidarity" with Saudi Arabia against "any external interference in its internal affairs or any side's attempt to undermine the Saudi sovereignty".

Freeland also said Haidar and her family merit special attention from the government of Canada, adding, "a lot of Canadian civil society has been speaking up for her".

A state-run news organization is reporting the kingdom is cutting off scholarship and fellowship programs to about 15,000 students now taking classes in Canada.

Saudi state airline Saudia also announced Monday that it would suspend flights to and from Toronto starting August 13.

According to The Globe and Mail, citing a Saudi government source, more than 15,000 Saudis are studying in Canada on government funded courses or grants at universities, colleges, and other institutions. It is unclear how many people this will affect, however, the Vancouver Sun said in 2015 about 5,000 news students arrive from Saudi Arabia each year.

They instead turned all questions over to the Queens District Attorney's Office which is yet to make a statement. The plane was parked by the American Airlines hangar - not at a gate - when the fetus was discovered.

"That certainly has not changed and that's basically where we stand today", she said.

Ms Badawi was given the US International Women of Courage Award in 2012 and is known for challenging Saudi Arabia's male guardianship system.

"It would be a shame for those students if they are deprived of the opportunity to study here", Freeland told reporters. "Canada stands together with the Badawi family in this hard time, and we continue to strongly call for the release of both Raif and Samar Badawi".

"We stand by what we have said".

The Saudi government on Sunday recalled its ambassador to Ottawa, barred Canada's ambassador to Riyadh and placed a ban on new trade, denouncing Canada for urging the release of rights activists.

On Monday, the Saudi foreign ministry tweeted: 'The kingdom announces that it is recalling its ambassador to Canada for consultation.

The ministry said it ordered the owner of the account to shut it down while investigations are completed.

Mohammad bin Abdullah al-Zulfi, a Saudi political analyst and former member of the country's Shura Council, a government advisory body, said he is proud of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman and his government's response to Canada.

Saudi Arabian Airlines says it will suspend all flights to and from Toronto as part of an ongoing dispute between the Saudi Arabian government and officials in the Trudeau government in Ottawa.
