Ambulance carrying Karunanidhi's mortal remains has left Kauvery hospital and is on its way to DMK Patriarch's Gopalapuram residence.

Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) party cadres react after Kauvery Hospital released a bulletin on party president M Karunanidhi's health in the evening, in Chennai, on Monday.

The controversy erupted after the state government rejected the DMK's demand for allotting space for Karunanidhi's burial on the Marina beach, instead offering space near the memorials to former chief ministers Chakravarty Rajagopalachari and K. Kamraj at Guindy.

His sharp dialogues and screenplay in Parasakthi (1952) made the movie a trendsetter in Tamil cinema.

Karunanidhi wasn't just a formidable politician; he was also a man of letters.

The hybrid named Keikaimalu still lives at the marine mammal park, where she helps teach children about genetics. But an animal hybrid doesn't necessarily mean a new species - not even established hybrids, such as the mule.

The DMK chief was admitted to the hospital for the first time on July 18 for change of tracheostomy tube.

"In the early years of the party, film was used to promote the message of social reform and Dravidian "self-respect", themes arising out of the earlier non-Brahmin movement and especially from the Self-Respect Movement, with whom the DMK leaders had been associated before breaking away to form the political party". The greatest achievement of his politician genius was how he melded tough regionalism with unequivocal nationalism. Later, he founded Tamil Nadu Tamil Manavar Mandram. He refused to pay the penalty, stayed in prison for more than a year and since then came to be known as "Kallakudi konda Karunanidhi" (Karunanidhi who won Kallakudi).

Tributes have poured in from around India, a clear indication of the stature of the Tamil leader on the federal scene. Karunanidhi is considered as the leader who has always been concerned about his party and its people.

When Mr Annadurai died in 1969, Mr Karunanidhi, then in his 40s, took over leadership of the DMK.

The biggest blot in Karunanidhi's political life was his decision to support the BJP-led government at the centre in 1999 when Jayalalithaa withdrew her support. Of the 15 elections held in Tamil Nadu since Independence, the DMK veteran faced 13 and lost none. His son M.K Stalin is the party chief now.
